    I think if that happens, it might be a sign that someone tried to fix a leaking valve cover gasket by adding a bit more torque to that bolt in the past.

    Thanks everyone. Red did you do spark plug tube seals while in there as well? Also, if I get in there and end up needing to adjust one of the valve clearances, should I just use the old gasket and wait to install the new one until I put it all back together after ordering/installing the shims?

    So that's a bit of a tough decision. What I did, was went to my local pick and pull and snagged about 20 shims out of junked 4runner with the same engine as my truck. I ended up having enough different size shims to fix all my valves in one go. You could do it your way too, it'll just take more total labor on your part (2 top end teardowns).

    Edit: forgot to answer the spark plug seals question. Yes I did those too while in there. They were kinda a PITA to get the old ones out.

    2,000 Tacoma rear axle with E-Locker.
    Totally agree, that video is a big help. Definitely very tedious, mixed with some simple math.
