Curious to know what they were asking if you don't mind sharing? My buddy's 3rd get is pretty nice but I'm partial to the 2nd probably along with most in this thread. You'll get the opposite when you post in the 3rd gen. Good luck!

I have been considering another Tacoma since I got my last one, but the brine and road salt that is used here has kept me away. Not that other vehicles don't also rust, and I can always treat the frame. I just don't feel like messing with the frame.

I might get lucky like this year so far, it hasn't snowed yet. The road has been coated with brine 3 or 4 times so even with out the snow I still get the free brine undercarriage treatment. I get that the roads need to be cleared, and the brining of the road gives crews a head start in clearing the roads. FWIW, my truck and frame hasn't rusted away yet.

I'm not a fan, but that's based on looks.

However, reading in the 3rd gen section may indicate to you that newer is better. But IIRC the Toyota Safety Sense hardware started in '18.

If you like what TSS does, that's fine. If you don't like it, or it might interfere with how you want to modify the truck, that's not so fine.

It's just a complexity to read about and consider. Pay close attention to pricing too. Because 'sometimes' you might do better spending just a little more than overpaying (in the current market) for a used example.

Yes I don’t mind sharing. It was $27,284.
I just thought about 3rd gen because they seem more available. I know by reading that the 16-18 may not be good choices. I also see a lot of 19-21’s for sale, why is that?I’ll continue to search for a 2gen though.

So I’m still learning about Tacomas. But I’d want add suspension to the one that I will purchase. I also believe that newer is always better. I’ll keep my options open. I know 2014-2015 are good years to look at in 2gen. Just want to know more about the 3rd gen.

Suspension of 2nd and 3rd gen are pretty interchangable, so there isn't much to be gained there.

But the real thing you need to be clear on is 'why' you think you need/want to add suspension. How you will use the truck is a key factor.

These trucks are very capable in stock form with just a tire upgrade and a capable driver.

I have been bouncing back and forth on upgrading my 2nd gen to a 3rd gen.
I always settle back on the 2nd gen because I like knowing I won’t feel terrible if I damage my 2nd gen on the trail. It’s just older and not a fresh as a near new 3rd gen.

I think the 4.0 is a little more robust and I would quickly modify the truck to where the TSS wouldnt work as well or at all.

I will say though, I have driven several 3rd gens and the gas mileage and interior are a lot better
