They know, and i know the tacoma has a 6 speed transmission, but this is about the S modes. My transmission works very well in the D mode right up to 6th. It's when you get to use the S modes there's some questioning why I don't have S6 like other trucks I've been hearing about. It's always been that way. Truck runs really good otherwise.

Or the dealer is lying so he doesn't have to fix the problem.

If you can live with it great, but your display is not working properly. The display should show what gear you set it in all the way up to and including 6th. I've had my truck for 4 years now and have right from the start used S mode and never had an issue as far as displaying what gear I'm in.

Been living with it. I would have no use for it anyways when 6th in the D mode is the same, it's not like there's an S7 gear to click next. I just figured Toyota likely thought the same, and just deleted it for their newer trucks.:notsure:

I only use 6th going downhill with a good tail wind.

My truck will always downshift to 4th whenever I touch the brakes on those steeper downhills, otherwise it'll get rolling close to 80 mph if I don't. I like 6th gear...low rpm, and a good cruising speed.

You make a good point about not wanting a dealer to mess up you’re truck. And right about S6, I never use it so in retrospect the display not working for S6 wouldn’t matter to me either as long as the transmission is working in 6th which you’ve confirmed in D mode.

Well the design flaw with my SR display is that in S mode it shows what mode you’re in, but not what gear you’re actually in. I can have the display show 5 for S5 but if I give it gas and it down shifts it’s still showing the S mode setting of 5. Again this is memory it’s been a while since I’ve used it lol. I wish it would show both, I can estimate the gear i’m in looking at the rpm. I know there are aftermarket devices that can show data including gear but not interested in connecting something to my OBDII port permanently.
I assume other models are the same way but not sure.

They display will not show what gear you’re in, just where you set it.

I think that’s what I said with more words lol. A weakness in the display design it would be good if it showed both.

I got mine to go through all 6 in S mode today. Not sure why it didn't want to drop to S1 before. This time, I was rolling but only at idle speed.

As noted by another poster you can move from first through sixth. It starts in 4th when you move it to S. However, if you move it to and hold it to upshift it will move to 5th then 6th without have to double tap.

    S1...???

That's like first gear in a manual...???

    I set S-drive as I'm driving between 35-45 mph.

It automatically is set to S4 which is about the speed for that range...35-45.

Going to S1 would probably be beneficial if you're towing something heavy...not for normal driving where AUTO does the gearing for you.

It's at the higher speed/RPMs where S-drive is beneficial.

At least, that's what I've discovered.

I like to manually shift S1-S6 when I’m drag racing Teslas.

Wanted to update this post in case anybody in the future runs into this same issue. Got the truck back from Toyota yesterday. They ended up replacing the whole ECM after doing some troubleshooting. S mode works perfectly now. Thought I’d give everybody a laugh at how the tech put the truck interior back together.
