Do you have a reputable transmission shop nearby? If so could they just rebuild it for you. I had that done for my F150 and it cost about half what a new transmission would have been. It went out at ~250k miles. They replaced the torque converter and rebuilt the rest. Worth it to keep it on the road.

now it’s at ~275k. ‘07 4.6 V8. Solid engine still going strong. Ok I’m getting off topic.

….boy if I could just marry that engine with my tacoma….ok ok I’ll stop here

here is a picture of my pan after I drained it and there was something definetly broke in the torque converter at one point it was sticking out in the center of the hole going into the converter.

Looks like a ton of particles collecting on the magnets. Looks a little milky to be honest. Perhaps it’s a lighting thing from the camera, can’t tell for sure.
Was the fluid a good red/dark red when you drained it? Get some paper towels and remove the magnets, wipe ‘‘em off and let’s see a pic of it.
You might be SOL here… sorry. From what you mentioned about the torque converter doesn't sound promising either.

THE fluid was pretty much black or a very dark red its never ever had a fluid change the stuff on the magnets is like sluge don't have any or very little grit or particals to it just slimmy feeling I haven't cleaned it out yet will get some more pictures when I do clean it should there be any kind of noise coming from the torque converter or should it be pretty solid no noise at all when removed from the transmission and if somthing broke in it all the crud from it breaking would end up in the fluid and trans correct.

    Yes, very likely.

In one of those videos that Mike posted the rebuilder talks about this. Pieces from the TC can get caught in the small fluid passages in just about anywhere in the trans and cause blockages. This is why simply swapping in a new TC is not the end.

http://www.car-part.com is a good site to track down local options. Plug in your data and see what shows up. :fingerscrossed:

    Another option is ebay.

If you are not able to personally inspect it and its an online order, insist on pictures of the transmission and history. What it was pulled from, how many miles, etc.

July 2022, I tracked down an A340F out of a 99 4Runner with 160k on it for $489. A quick swap of the Park/Neutral Safety Switch (4Runner and Tacoma have a different connector) and it was good to go. Ordered via ebay from Spalding Auto Parts up in WA (https://www.ebay.com/str/spaldingautopartsinc). Make sure the trans includes the torque converter.

    Good luck with the search.

Mostly stock, just getting it to my liking, just happy to have had the taco and now my 4Runner.
What he said, I used them for a trailblazer ss tranny replacement as nobody else was stocking them.

Keep adding fluid until the level is between the marks on the dipstick. Do this while in park or neutral and everything is up to running temp, typically 140°-160°F.

Did you prefill the TC before install. It'll hold several quarts IIRC.
Pretty sure the answer to this is no, but maybe someone with certain knowledge will chime in. @Area51Runner Mike do you know?

You’d run into an issue of the starter being on the opposite side. That’s what happened to @dunc_werks if I’m not mistaken. Also the transfer case extension is going to be different. @JPW99, I’m on my phone so searching is a pain but look at @dunc_werks threads - he ran into this issue as well. Cool that it seems to have just been the torque converter! Nice!
