There is a reason I fly VFR only. It's just not worth it to me to fly in bad weather. I fly for fun and not because I have to. I take enough risk with grass, gravel, and water landings. Weather is something I don't screw around with.

    Yeah.
Wow, that's awful. We had some heavy rain up here, brief period of strong winds. Rain lasted longer than 10 minutes here, though. Nice and clear now.

Well folks, the time has come for our family to say goodbye to another beloved 3.4L Toyota. This is my dad's and is THE Toyota that got me into Toyotas. I bought my 1st gen Tacoma because of how much I loved this 4Runner. My dad has 'upgraded' to a 2023 Tacoma TRD OR. He planned to keep this one too but he hasn't been driving it as much as he anticipated. I really wish I could keep it for another year or two so I don't bang my 4Runner up building our house but we already have 3 vehicles for 2 drivers and are limited on parking at our rent house.

Took a little trip through part of the Apalachicola national forest this past weekend. Have an extra hazard to watch out for that you won't find in the Ozarks.

It looks nice. That is low mileage for a 2000 100 series. The seat bottom can be replaced to look near the original.

Whoever buys it needs to know what they are getting into with a 23-year-old expensive vehicle with AHC.

I'm looking for some guidance on an issue of closed trails in the Ozarks. There are two trails that are reported to be closed, but we find the signs have been torn down. Visitors from out of state consider the trails to be open and run the trails.

I will appreciate any help from this group on how to find a permanent solution to these ongoing complaints and questions.

    1) Are the trails open or closed?
    2) If the trails are closed, can we get a steel gate like the ones in the Ouachitas that are not easily torn down to lock traffic?

    TRAILS
The first trail is Forest Service Rd 1205 35° 46.8343' N, 92° 56.0726' W-- We found a group of Jeeps running the trail during a recent visit.

    upload_2023-3-4_5-51-21.jpg

The second trail is at Hanging Rock. Visitors from out of state accidentally got into this trail.

The one on 1205 was an access road to the base of the hill back when there was a landslide in the 90's so they could access fill. I have heard it's closed and I have heard it's open. I'm sure if USFS wanted it closed they'd put a cable or gate in.

There are pictures all over Fb of people at those bluffs near Richland Creek. USFS puts up a sign saying it's closed, someone tears it down so they can say "we didn't know", and then people run it genuinely not knowing. That's why they have the MVUMs but it definitely should be easier to get paper copies of current versions. In reality if USFS catches you on it they don't care whether you knew or not. They'll say you should have checked the MVUM and known. It will be a ticket and their tickets are not cheap.

I've politely let people know before that they were on a closed section but ultimately you can't really do anything about it and personally I don't know that a gate or cable would do anything more than a sign would. If someone really wants to go through it they're going to open a gate or take a cable down. Unfortunately the real deterrent would be pictures all over Fb saying "I went down this trail not knowing it was closed and got a huge fine" but people aren't going to publicize that.

A good gate would definitely stop most people. If someone wants to show up with a cutting torch and remove it, that's on them. But at that point you can't help stupid.

I have definitely seen people who off road with a 'master key' in the form of a cordless grinder or bolt cutters. Needless to say I don't off road with them anymore. All it takes is one asshole to open it then everyone else assumes it's an open trail.

See when I think of gate for actual service roads. I think of like a heavy duty mining gate. No bolt cutter in the world is going to open that sucker. But like a standard cattlegate or farm gate that you might stick on your uncle's back property, for sure.

All of the gates I've seen in NF are cattle gates w/ a lock. They're generally not funded for custom fabbed stuff. The exception to that is ERFO projects. The local ranger districts get ahold of those ERFO funds and all bets are off because there's usually a good chunk of funding and a short window to spend it. They'll spend big money w/ that.

Jersey barriers seem to be working to close the road from St. Joe to Woolum. I don't know how they managed to get them for that road but it works.
