I can't answer for him but closed cell has a much higher r value.

"Closed cell spray foam has an R-value of R-7 per inch.In comparison, open cell spray foam has an R-value of R-3.8 per inch."

So I should get open cell foam?

specifically talking about the space behind the new 2x12 header. It has a matching header on the other side for a soffit which contains heater ducting for the 2nd floor. Probably doesn’t really need insulation at all but now that the drain pipe is inside the 2x4 stud cavity I can’t stuff fiberglass batting. So the only option is spray. Cost doesn’t bother me as we plan to seal cracks in the floor anyway because we don’t like mice. About 3/4” between drain pipe and header so plenty of space to fit a nozzle.

    so open or closed cell?

I would highly recommend NOT chipping any split rail fence material. I worked for a tree service company for years and owned my own landscaping business. I’ve run some pretty aggressive chippers during those years. They are not designed to run lumber through them (yes…I know…it doesn’t mean they can’t) but there is an inherent risk of bodily harm if you do. If cedar and not rotten as Oz mentioned…they are worth money. Worst case as also mentioned you could use as firewood even if just in an outdoor fire pit. Would hate to see anyone get hurt in the process.

I’m not an expert by any means. To me, the main difference is that you can get fire rated closed cell. I only had 2x4 exterior walls. When you do the math and take into account everything in your walls, the increased r value of closed cell doesn’t add up to what you’d think. For your particular job I would go with open cell. It will provide good insulation and air seal. That’s my 2 cents

my afternoon project turned into a full-on project. but i guess it technically assembled fine, just my other stuff didn't work out.

got a new tv stand with a "fire place" heater in it. trying to class up the house in an easier way than plumbing in a real fire place.

it went together as great as terribly-jumpy instructions generally allow. the problems began when trying to fit my yamaha rx-a2070 receiver into it...
in fairness, i never measured. i eyeballed it in the store when i was getting other stuff and saw all the tv stands were on closeout.

but the instructions jumping from piece to piece between steps and flipping assemblies in odd ways between steps really got under my skin.

turns out my eyecrometer is mostly calibrated correctly. the receiver fit, but the feet were too tall. so off to the parts drawer for shallower foot pads that will work.

of course, now with the unit shoehorned into the shelf, i've basically ignored all of yamaha's airspace/ventilation requirements for something that creates heat. not good if i want it to last into next week. so some fans were in order to better circulate the air. fortunately, i'd been hoarding some low-profile 5v USB fans for the last 12 years specifically for this purpose!

so i rammed some fan screws into the housing of a $2k stereo like a high school kid installing underglow on his civic in a walmart parking lot.

time will tell how well it works!

and while i was busy rejiggering the whole thing, i added some Atmos speakers, poor-man-style. they're just going to be (permanently) temporary until i build my set of floor standing speakers(i've been 'planning' the last 5 years)

I love creative fan use. Is there enough clearance OUTSIDE for the fans to pull?

    ^everything these guys said^

I used to work trimming trees out of power lines. I HATED chipping dead, dried wood. With freshly cut branches the chipper would grab onto the branch and pull it through. With dead wood it wouldn't grab and you were forced to push it through little by little. The wood would snatch, grab and jerk and would hurt your hands even through heavy work gloves.

OZ-T is right about selling weathered wood. For a while my wife had a pretty good side hustle going on selling weathered wood on etsy. People will pay what I considered stupid money for old wood. She found an old cedar fence that the owner just wanted gone. She took the wood and cut it into pieces that fit into a priority mail box. After that sold out she couldn't find any more, but it was nice while it lasted.

I used fans like that in a build I did. Took a mid century stereo console (didn't work), removed all the old electronics and filled it with a AVR, printer, switch, PS3, Wii and other office electronics. I installed two usb fans on the back panel that plug into a switched power outlet on the back of the AVR. when it's turned on the fans turn on as well.

i keep watching second hand stores and facebook for a unit like that. i want to update one to some potent audio gear, but keep the external appearance. most people think they're all extremely valuable, too much to cut apart like i need to...
