Jumps are the most intimidating thing, I know for how long I have been riding I should be way better at jumps than I am. Riding with people that can tow you in is super helpful for me. I know a while back I was riding a bike park with a friend and I just followed him over this creek gap and felt 100% comfortable hitting it. I wouldn't have hit it had I been by myself haha.

One thing I do think has helped my confidence in the air a ton is the Jeff Kendall-Weed method of jibbing off of everything. Whenever I can I pop off a rock, root, or roller. It's not quite the same as a jump but when you hit something at speed it can feel similar. There is one line at fountainhead where you hit a drop into a roller with a pretty big rock at the top of the roller, last time I rode it I just let go of the brakes at the drop and bunny hopped over the rock, in my mind it was the most technical air time I had ever hit haha.

How do you run your Garmin?

I just didn’t want it on the handlebars.
I wish there was a flash mount it came with.

I have a stem cap mount for my gravel bike (lower risk of biting it and breaking it off). For the MTB, I use the elastic straps and mount it to the bar. I want the mount to be flexible in case I eat shit. In the location you have it, I'd be afraid of hitting it if I stuffed the front end and I'd sweat all over it (I know, gross but I sweat under water, the struggle is real).

If I had a decent double sided tape and flat mount I’d put it as close to the stem as possible while still being on the top tube. Clean look and I can glance down there just as easy as I can at the handle bars.

I use the top cap mount for my MTB. And then the handlebar extension mount for my gravel. Both great. I found i bounce too much for the elastic mounts.

Those things are super tight. I’m more worried about dry rot than anything for them.

Also, not sure which to trust. I would trust the Garmin more if I had the spoke magnets that measured wheel speed. Who knows, take it for what it is I guess.

1978 elevation gain with Garmin. So less distance more vert.

You say that but I've had a brand new one not hold my Garmin snugly while tackling Moab. Haha.

I also would trust Garmin more. They've got more sensors. But that's just me.

I think I trust Garmin more, but I’ve had people with the wheel sensors for their edge and my watch match up with 1% of total distance.

I’m not sure what sensors the edge 530 has vs the AW7. I think the 530 released in ‘19 and the AW7 end of ‘21. I’ll look into it for sure.

Also got my pants back from RideNF. I actually prefer they patch a quality product rather than just scrap and send a new one. Photo from the Instagram story.

For the repair I wanted to show some support and bought more drip.

I find my Apple Watch 6 and Garmin typically are within a percent or so for distance, Florida is flat so nothing much to compare for elevation. Every once in a while the watch does seem to lose connection and it is way off from the Garmin though. I have not had it occur the other way. I typically do the same 2 or 3 routes so I know the distances and know when one of them is off.

I use Garmin’s MTB mount and have never had a problem with it. I didn’t trust the rubber bands for the head unit in the inevitable event of a crash.

At school, my job is driving the town transit bus. Today I decided I was going to race one of the routes on my gravel bike and see if I could beat the bus. The bus routes are 15min outbound, timecheck if early, then 15 minute back inbound for a total of 30 minutes in a whole loop. I didn't timecheck on the bike lol, so it took me 14:50 to do the whole thing.

    Transition Demo day!
Got on a Smuggler and a Spur. I’ll need to let my emotions settle before I can really give any worthwhile feedback beyond ‘bikes these days are amazing.’

Sorry for crap pics as I was in a time crunch.

Dang bro. I totally missed this. We got there around 12pm since my significant other does not like to ride when it's cold (and she's the boss). I got my PRP shots on both knees last weekend so technically, I was not supposed to ride for 2 weeks but this weather is just too hard to resist (I took it easy though).

I wanted to demo a Spur but it was always out. Probably just as well as I would've been tempted. What did you think of the Spur? About 80% of my riding is now on a short travel bike and I hit everything on it at Blankets Creek that I would do on the Evil. These "downcountry" bikes are pretty dang cool.

Sounds like we just missed each other. I was on the road at 12:30 to meet a guy that was buying that SB115.

The Spur kinda stole the show for me. I really liked that bike. Like you, I had to wait my turn to hop on, but I’m glad I did. By the time I was able to get a Spur I only had enough window of time for a quick half dwelling lap, but that was enough to know it would be a phenomenal bike for 80-90% of my riding.

Getting on a Smuggler was my primary goal and getting there early paid off as I got my wish. Down side was that I was the first person to ride the bike post being built up. The guy setting it up did acknowledge the brakes had not been bedded, and boy was he right. I did a hack job of a ‘quick bed’ and it showed. The bike was loads of fun, but it was tough for me to really focus on the bike, its handling and character while having zero faith in the brakes. Kinda put a cloud on the ride for me. Sorry for the shit feedback there. I will say the newer Smuggler is noticeably more efficient than its predecessor. Still lively and has pop, while still feeling stable enough to plow and corners well.

Short of the long, I’d really like to get another spin on the Smuggler before I decide between one of those two. But yea, you really can’t go wrong with most any bike these days.

Still happily rocking the chameleon…for now

I'm 45 and just got back into MTB a couple years ago. This video completely changed the way I jump (1st link)! Never jumped this well even in my 20's. Watched countless videos on "techniques," but this was a game changer. You will be thankful that you watched the video, but upset that you didn't discover it sooner. He also has a great video on cornering (2nd link).
