Toyota mechanic goes in depth on 3rd Gen

Like a 1st Gen.

 

Like a bunch of hype.

 

Feels like no dash rattles, quiet interior, quality plastics that dont feel cheap to the touch, body work aligning perfectly, solid heavy door thunk, a linear throttle, a transmission that shifts smooth, a hood that doest flutter on the highway, etc.

 

Have none of those issues, with either one of my Tacomas. Also have a gen 1 with 260k miles. Nice truck but it’s an ancient piece of shit that I’m terrified to die in if someone hits me. As its metal is paper thin.

 

Nope! The Taraha plant in Japan where the 4R is built is one of the best plants in the world. You can be in denial all you want, but there is a difference. I have owned enough Toyota's in my life and the Japan built vehicles are just put together better. The 1990, 1994, and the 4R are by far the best I have owned! Period.

 

This right here. After i drove around that 4runner when i first got it i was like what the fuck. This thing is so much more solid than my damn Tacoma it’s unbelievable.

It’s a frigging 4 runner. Putting something like that on a pedestal this high is just sad.

Enlighten me then; what details am I missing...that can't be attributed to the difference in suv vs pickup construction.
Vague platitudes of "build quality", "fit and finish" and "solid" aren't things I can weigh.

 

They are doing such a grand job with teslas right now. World renowned quality, is job#1

 

My AC works fine even on triple-digit days. It's my cruise control I miss so badly. My RPMs are out of control when I use my cruise, so I don't use it.

 

Everything you described is 100% design choice (insulation or lack thereof) and not the physical location of where it was built.

This argument is bizarre and nonsensical.


Edit. I have a Mazda, built in Japan. I have a Tacoma, built in Mexico. The finish on the Mazda is miles better. No question. It's a car with better interior materials and sound dampening, because that was what it was designed to be. But the fit is equal between the two. What parts arrived at the assembly line, were assembled equally well. Because assembly has jack shit to do with design.

There were a couple of threads on this subject. Much like the TSB for northern climates and frame rust, the TSB for the AC was basically for the hottest climates. The main issue occurs in stop and go traffic where you don't get ample air flow since you're really not going anywhere and your fan isn't moving that fast. I've experienced minor issues on the hottest days, but easily tolerable for me.

 

We have a 19 4Runner. It's solid. But I have to disagree about the cheap feeling plastic and hood flutter. Linear throttle I will give you, but that has more to do with it being a 4.0 with port injection and a 5 speed transmission than anything to do with where it is made.

 

My 2018 has had no issues except a misaligned bed which was easily fixed, cold ac on 100 degree days, no shakes or vibrations before the lift and none after. No complaints, love the truck and I think the 18s are a great year.

 

I have both as well 2019 Limited with 18k miles on it and my 2018 Tacoma with 20k miles, both have been flawless. Hard to compare the build quality on these two different vehicles. However I will say both are built great, now our 99 $runner is an amazing vehicle, looks like showroom new inside and out and drives like new and it's rolling up on 300k miles. Now that is an amazing Toyota!

 

If they gave you a choice whether if your next
Tacoma could be made in Japan or Mexico which would it be? They make them better in Japan. There a reason why some people will look for the J vin Toyotas that are made in Japan only. They are built/put together better.

 

I can only say when my brother bought a 4runner in 1984 and I bought a Toyota 4wd sr5 pickup, his 4runner was built much better than my truck...all the body gaps were perfect, and his 4runner ran so much quieter with no rattles. It was terrible he had it stolen a couple years later. I never had any of my Toyotas stolen.
