Yeah the Tacoma has the Haltech managed supercharger. It is quite a bit more zippy than the 4R.

I find myself comparing them a lot, even tho the Tacoma is an auto and the 4R is a manual. The 4R is definitely a truck and drives like it. Almost a little ponderous.

Maybe because the 4R is older ('98), the truck ('02) is way more refined feeling. The heater works way better. The gauges do too. The 4R has way more wind noise and the doors feel light and tinny. The 4R also makes little noises that catch me off guard, and are taking a bit of getting used to. For example, the trans whines a bit. More-so than I remember my old manual Tacoma ('98) doing.

Having said all that, the 4R is a lot of fun to drive around town and is getting really good fuel mileage. Later this week I'll be pulling off the skids and taking a closer look at everything. I have some MT-90 coming so I'll see if that reduces some of the trans noise and see if it's easier to downshift into 1st gear.

Yeah my 04 Tacoma definitely feels more refined inside, being 8 years newer of course. But it drives way more like a truck than the T4R does lol. Probably because it's so modified. The 4runner is smoother imo. But the truck is more fun to drive just because of the added power (both are manual trans).

But the 4runner is way more practical for me family-wise. Able to take my daughter and dog to the dog park every day after work now without having to borrow my wife's Rav4. Can camp with the family without cramming 3 people into an xtra cab. Day trips. etc.

But I do still take the truck out every other day to work or someplace just to remember what a zippy vehicle feels like, and I never would have described it that way before I got the 4runner lol.

Your manual transmission sounds exactly like mine does and how my 3rz truck sounded too

Does the trans feel the same in your two rigs. I assume they are the same trams, R150F. Any gear whine noise in either one?

No noise. the only noise I used to get pretty frequently on the Tacoma was the pilot bearing chirp in neutral. But that went away over time. No whining.

They feel pretty identical except the clutch on the 4runner is wayyy lighter than on the Taco

Yeah, Ben told me that you said it sounded normal. And, I'm not saying there is something wrong. I just seems louder that I recall from my previous experience.

The clutch feels good to me. I like it a lot better than the corolla's clutch.

Yeah it took me a bit to get used to, my Tacoma it wants to spring your foot back up pretty good. The 4runner I can almost hardly feel it if I have my hiking boots on

one thing that really surprised me after driving all kinds of stuff is that I prefer having a heavy clutch even for a daily in traffic. I want that strong hook even if it's a workout lol

If my buddy ever stops teasing me about selling me his Subaru I'd slap a heavy clutch in that too lol

Yeah I prefer it a little heavy over a little too light. I like knowing it's there

Had an MT Charger rental years ago and the clutch on that thing was so heavy it felt like trying to push a cinder block across the floor with your foot, that took some getting used to

I put a lot of miles on a TDI Volkswagen and the clutch drove me absolutely nuts. Might as well have been kicking air

I've had to pull over after an hour in SLC traffic as I thought my knew was about to let go. While I prefer the heavier side, even the stock Tacoma clutch can be a bitch in that situation. Zane recently drove it and I'm sure he wouldn't say it's all that heavy. I'm getting old and enjoy the paddle shifters on the daily. Can be a vegetable in auto or when the fun is needed, the paddles are great.
They still have the t56M in the gen? It was a beast in the viper I drove, all the inputs were heavy, that car always wanted to go fast and kill you.
The first gens are awful as it's essentially 2 5cyl independent of each other. Later gens they routed the pipes together before the side pipes for a better sound. I loved the sound myself with the top down and exhaust echoing off everything you blow by.

Your clutch feels the same as my stock clutch I thought, it's nothing to write home about. I'm going up 600lbs of grabbing force with my new one so that should give my leg a workout.
