Does it have to be a certain temperature for any garden work?

I going to have my hands full with growing grass from last year hydroseeding. Thinking about spreading grass seeds, maybe fertilizer.

 

Yes and no, ground has to be dry enough, and not muddy also not frozen (obviously)to till up. When Im not doing something or its a nice day like today is a perfect time.

We are switching from bell peppers to "Marconi peppers" yield is more/faster growing and they taste better than bell peppers

Our first sweet corn is already about 5” tall, peas, beans and tomatoes are getting very big

 

My ground is to soft. I'm sinking in walking around.

 

Way early HERE for much anything but prepping.

Yes we could get more snow, but chances are getting less every minute.

Pruning apricot trees, need to spray with copper right away. If it rains after pruning then, chances of fungal infection increase. Thing is, really need to prune apricot trees mid summer, in the dry, but I missed that window last year. Oh well they are very vigorous little guys, I may let them set fruit this year. Cross my fingers they don't bloom too early.

Next I need to make the beds around my fig trees larger, add a bunch of lime and sand.

 

Saturday we had 16 inches of new snow and now the in my yard is 2 feet high. Not to mention the new garden area is at the end of the driveway and the snowplow has put a 10 foot high pile of snow on the end of the new garden. We are probably 8 weeks out from the first gardening work.

 

Optimal temperature for grass to germinate is between 50-55 degrees. Seed can withstand freezing temps but once it sprouts it will die off if it dips into the 40’s. Peas, onions, and lettuce can germinate in temps as low as 35 degrees. Just have to find the right variety. There are others like root vegetables that will germinate in the 40’s. You could start them indoors and transfer when soil is workable. We will sometimes grow our potatoes in a doubled up garbage can. The inner can has drain holes drilled into it. The outer can catches the overflow. As the plant grows we add more soil and mulch.

 

Can Old Man Winter, snow interfere with prep?

Does pruning below freezing temps kills the plant, or limbs of fruit trees?

 

I had hydroseeding done last Fall. When can I add more seeds? I don't know if it's to early.

Trees being dormant, not harmed. BUT still susceptible to fungus with moisture and as temps get a little warm. Depends somewhat on the tree.

 

If there is still snow on the ground or temperatures are still below freezing I would wait. Once ground thaws and temps rise to an average of 47-50 degrees then you can scatter seed. Rake it in and lightly cover with a mixture of sand and soil or peat moss. It needs light. I like to use peat and a starter fertilizer. Water it but keep in mind that the seed should remain moist for the next 7 days. So look at your weather and make sure no heavy freeze is forecast and temperatures will stay above 47.
