Hey guys, I just noticed a rattling noise which seams like it’s coming from the front end during acceleration in first gear, and at higher rpms in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (but not when I take my foot off the pedal). I’ve checked the heat shield and it seams to be tight, so I ruled that out.

I got new CV,’s last year, but one of my boots is torn, could it be something to do with the CV?

    truck is a 1998 5spd 4x4

This is happening with me too. Like a light dry rattle? I haven’t figured it out for mine. It’s in all gears, except 4th, most pronounced in 5th

    Terrible
Does this happen in neutral when you let the clutch all the way out? and does it change proportionally with RPMs?

I don’t think it happens in neutral, but it does increase with RPM

It happens in neutral but only when the clutch is pressed in and I rev the rpm's.

No I would say its pretty much the same rattle no matter the rpms. maybe a slight change.

Ok, mine did it when I let the clutch out even in neutral. It was a lot quieter in neutral but still there. 5th gear ended up going out on the highway and then I lost every other gear but 4th. Happened on Sunday and getting a new transmission now. Yota Bro's sounds completely different maybe something else that is loose if not the heatshield.

This sounds a lot like mine even though mine still did it in neutral. how long has that been going on for you? And was it a rattle or a click? mine was like a click that went up and down based on RPMS.

So I was mistaken, it does happen in neutral even at idle with no foot on the gas

Here's an update of the sound. Doesn't seam to be the heat shield. Sounds like it's coming from inside the Cat?

It could be the audio, but yours sounds a lot like mine, but harder. I only heard mine from inside. Haven’t had someone hit the gas in neutral for me to put my ear close and find the source. At least for me it can’t be the cat bc I don’t have any cats lol

Turns out the 2 bolts on the O2 sensor were rusted out and were causing the rattle. Temporary fix with zip ties...

Zip ties on the exhaust? yeah no. Those will be melted the first time the truck gets up to temp.

I didn't even know that was a thing- thanks for following up. Learn something new every day.

Two part system, the tie, and then a tensioner and crimper like steal shipping bands?
