Just did it this weekend. Cut 2 inch holes on both sides. and I used an old license plate with sound deadening for the hvac cover.

Somewhat off-topic here, but related to cowl induction insofar as it has to do with avoiding water/moisture ingress into bad places:

Can anyone DM me or reply here w/ a few links to good threads on TW for comprehensive waterproofing for 2nd gens?

I recall various things like diff breather tubes relocations, transfer case breather (?), checking to be sure vent hoses on 4WD actuators front & rear are intact and properly clamped, etc. spread out across different TW threads. Are there one or more good "master threads" on all the things that need to be done to make a 2nd gen ready to ford in water up to, say, the front end of the hood?

For how long? Water WILL get in and there’s a lot of stuff besides the carpet that won’t appreciate a dunking. If it’s just fording then replace the carpeting with a rubber liner and seal up the rear vent but the air bag connectors are still there. Maybe linex the tub too. Making it submersible enough to survive driving hours on end in flooded streets might require a sump pump.

I mean youve pretty much covered it. But just like Scott said, it depends how long you expect to be in the water. If it's just 50 yds, you can hold a bow wake about the height you're talking about and the rest of the water will be about at your floor boards depending on lift/tires. If you're planning on much further than that or attempting to actually ford water that's hood height you'll float and at that point water is getting into the cab no matter what.

The same shit everyone else has.
    Stupid question…..

I assume this mod isn’t affecting gas mileage at all is?

I love the idea of clearing up some more room in the engine bay for bullshit.

This is the exact same thing as a fender intake just less risky.

Nope. If it does, it's negligible either way. I'm digging the extra room, and now that I deleted my SAIS system (except the stupid AVSs) I freed up most of the passenger side. Now I just need to repackage the brain for my winch into a tighter form and hard mount my air compressor in that space.

From a theoretical aerodynamic standpoint it should increase efficiency slightly, the base of the windshield is a high pressure zone. In reality this effect is negligible.

I believe he has a gap between the plate and the opening. It is hard to see in this picture. If not, not sure how it works lol

    This is what I have.

The reason we've been putting "plates" in that location, ahead of the engine intake and above the current fan intake, is because of a perceived need to provide a secure path for air to move into the intake and also into the A/C - I thought this was intended to protect the engine intake at WOT from being starved due to the A/C fan being on high. But they end well before they reach the top of the cowl, and leave a large amount of space for the fan intake to operate from - basically just providing deflection to the engine intake and nothing more.

From those pictures that were posted, it almost seems like the plate is instead a floating lid, leaving an inch on the underneath and at the very top lip? I can't tell, it's hard to tell clearance from the angles. But that's going to put needless strain on the fan motor while providing very little extra benefit to the engine intake if the clearance over that fan intake is too small.

And to be fair to that entire line of thought, I'm not even sure there is truly a need to provide a diverting plate for airflow - it feels like an extremely fringe thing that MIGHT occur, but with the plate at least it's not to the detriment of either intake.

now the real question for me is, how much less junk ends up in the Cabin air filter?

I’ve never had anything over my ac intake or the hole I cut for the engine intake. I did not cut any extra holes in the sides and it still performs exactly as it did with the intake thru the fender. AC blows exactly the same at WoT as before the mod. So take that for what’s it’s worth. But IMO people are overthinking this.

This is my experience as well. I did the reoute with no lid or extra holes a couple years ago and noticed no difference. Its working like a champ.

I also did not install any separator plate over the hvac intake, no issues for 2 years

Exactly my experience. The only real difference I could see is slightly less intake noise in the cab.
