Camper Shell Garage Lift

I just finished my camper shell/cap garage lift. I didn't want it resting on a rope or 2x4 so I cobbled together some brackets to hook around the outside. Since Leer toppers hang over the side, the "Tile Hanger" hooks slip under the edge. There is no need to manually lift the topper. Total cost of it minus the winch was about $98. The winch was $109 at harbor freight. I originally tried a block and tackle I found on Amazon but it turned out to be garbage. I was sick of screwing around and just decided to buy a cheep hoist.

My Granddad did something similar, except he used a pair of 2x4s that cradled the canopy, and it all went back to a hand-crank winch.

 

Looks like a nice setup. If it were me I'd consider adding some fixed length chains from your upper mount to secure those quick links once it's hoisted.

 

I like the idea. Right now it's hanging on n the winch which is probably ok but the damage or injury from a simple failure would be tragic.

 

Hi, I know this is an old post, but I plan to do something similar to your set up. I have a couple questions if you don't mind as I am very nooby when it comes to these kind of things.

1) How has the system held up over the years?
2) If you did it again, what would you do differently?
3) What nuts and bolts should I use to attach the pulleys, pad eye hooks, and winch to ensure that they do not get torn out of the joists with the weight (this is where my lack of knowledge with these things come into play)?
