I told ya I'd drive home a PRO over this! 2 cylinders failed leak down test. Only 16K miles.

For now. This is a very slight leak. But still a leak. They want to me schedule to bring the truck back in. Give me a loaner. And fix the problem.

Just curious if the fix is pulling the head off … or just a valve cover ?

It won't involve pulling off the head. At most the valve cover. But it may just be the cam cover grommet.

Here’s what you should do. Go look up how many 3rd gen Tacoma’s have been sold. Then tally the “major” failures noted on here. Then calculate the percentage of Tacomaworld noted issues/3rd gens created.

When your calculator gives you a very small negative exponential number, you can quit worrying.

    TLDR: Don’t be worried.

Really. You must be new to vehicles. All vehicles can mess up. Toyota less than others but it still happens.

That makes sense totally..I went through a similar issue with the 2006 Colorado I had, drove me from ever buying another GM.

Man, I don't think I'd ever buy anything that wasn't Toyota, Honda, or Hyundai. Between my bad experiences, and my close friends bad experiences, GM, Ford, Chrysler and Jeep are all crossed off.

    UPDATE:
I contacted Toyota Corporate again a couple of days ago. I told them about the leak and asked them to review my case again I opened last year when the valves failed. They said they would have a case manager contact me within 24 hours.
The case manager contacted me the next day. We reviewed my case and he asked what would I like to have happen. I said I would like an extended warranty at no cost. I told him I had been a loyal Toyota and Lexus customer. Buying 7 new Toyotas and 3 new Lexus. And that I couldn't just replace this truck being it was made just one year. He said he'd review my case and get back to me within 24 hours.
He called me back yesterday afternoon and said Toyota wanted to thank me for being a loyal customer. And as a gesture of their appreciation. They wanted to offer me a goodwill extended warranty of an additional 5 years and to 100K miles bumper to bumper. I thanked him very much. He said I should get my paperwork in the mail in 7-10 business days.
So I'm happy that Toyota is standing behind their product. And at 7K miles a year. I'll have 5 more years of bumper to bumper warranty.

Look at the volume of trucks out on the road. Tacomaworld is a bit like my Mechanic buddy when I asked him what cars are good. His response - “I can only tell you what’s not good. Nobody brings me their car because it’s good”

Odd that all the old GM products (8-12 years old and 100k plus on the odometer) needed work but mostly maintainence stuff, yet the new one blows the engine in 4 years and it's considered normal.

I had to chuckle at this. My first GM car was a 92 S10 blazer. I think I bent the pushrods at least 5 times all before 20k miles. POS. Second was a 95 Silverado 2500. Lasted 2 years before the trans shot itself all over route 17 in Yorktown VA. POS. Both of those bought new.
2002 Z28. Bought new. LS1. 4LE60 trans. Sold in 2011 with 197k miles. Car is still on the road with 338k miles with its second owner.

Non GM cars have far exceeded any expectation I have ever had. 2 years ago my wife retired. She wanted a new suburban. So I bought her one as a present. 785 miles and check engine light came on. Literally 3 weeks after I bought it for her. ECM module shorted, aux power module shorted, body electronics module shorted, all 8 coils shorted. Come to find out 3 ground straps for the 3 modules had not been put on the truck. 32k to repair obviously covered by warranty but I sold it back.

2006 Subaru Forester with 387,294 on the odometer. Replaced head gaskets at 95k miles. In my driveway.

2018 Subaru Outback. 157,981 miles sitting in driveway. Front rear diff fluid and CVT fluid change at 128,285.

1987 Toyota pickup. 413,896. Sitting in garage. Had this since the day before I graduated HS. No nada zero zilch repairs ever. Just normal replacement bullshit.

2022 Tacoma SR5. 5489 miles. Don’t have any trans shifting issues. Not down on power, doesn’t hunt for gears, and I get 24 plus mpg.

But I did the same thing I’ve done to every other car that I’ve owned that made it to 2500 miles. Drained and filled every fluid I could.

    Still, GM sucks.

The breakdowns are bad enough but then GM tries to dick people out of fixing it. Mine blew within the powertrain warranty and the hidden warranty on the top end but somehow they didn't want to fix it. Took several months to just get a dealer to take the job..the one who diagnosed and got it certified for the warranty then wanted cash in full from me. Finally found another dealer who would and I had a surprise bill waiting for me, "oh GM will reimburse you but I can't give you the truck back till I get paid" and GM tells me "oh he could have called and gotten approval but we can't help you". Like my niece and nephews in the kitchen and the cookie jar breaks, they all have crumbs on their mouths and nobody knows anything but they didn't do it. Fucking absurd

I told the GM rep about the buyback on my wife's 1996 Tacoma..then asked what's more normal, a 13 year old truck in MA having rust issues or a 4 year old truck that's maintained, not worked with, etc blowing the motor..and if he honestly can say the 4 year old truck then it doesn't sound like they're building a good product and inspiring my confidence, not to mention the refusal to honor their own written warranties.
