What kind of Lab should I get?

I've been wanting to get a dog for a while now. Need someone who can ride with me for my other job that won't complain about the 150 miles a day. I think I want a lab to train for duck hunting, I'm also sick of getting out of the blind

I'm leaning more towards chocolate...

Any other duck hunters out there or someone with input?

The only reason I ask is because I hear people say that yellow labs are the easiest to train and chocolates are a little more hard headed and stubborn sometimes? I was surprised to hear that was really much of a difference.

Just buy it from a breeder who breeds working dogs, not AKC show dogs

 

I have never seen a german shorthair as a duck dog. Is that just me? Cool looking dog though, I'll look in to them...

I do not think the color is really going to make a difference as much as the general breeding behind it. As stated before, find someone who breeds them for working/hunting dogs...not show dogs. Better yet, adopt one.

I had a black lab mix, he was awesome. He pointed birds, without ever being taught.

We have always had 2 yellow labs in the family. We just had to put ours last month. Bummer but man are they great dogs.

 

Go with a FOX RED LAB. google them they are great looking color. Im actualy got my dog getting bred to one right now.
color dont mean $h_t, its the idiot that trains the dog. who has the hard head and lets the dog train him.

Something special about a chocolate lab. Be ready for 2 years of pure hell before he stops chewing and finally calms down a bit. Mix pepper in water and put it in a spray bottle and spray everything he chews on. Mine would go out where the phone and cable came into the house and chew it up all the time. Sprayed pepper spray on it...His mouth was on fire for a solid hour...lol He stopped.

In all seriousness, having a lab takes a special kind of person. They are hyper. Need lots of walks/runs/swims to get rid of some of it. They love water, hope you have a pond/river/lake nearby. That is the most fun i have with my lab. In the water. Throw a stick or ball or a rubber duck in the lake, he goes swimming and gets it. He'll even dive under the water if he thinks its gone under.

I've had labs forever. Awesome smart dogs. My black labs were always the best. The one yellow I had was super hyper. I think it's just breeding though. Go to a breeder and pick out the one that catches your eye. That's how I got the best dog I ever had.

 

Get a female, that way you don't have to worry about the dog humping you every time he sees you. Haha.

 

I grew up with a black lab that my grandmother had and now have a black lab / boxer mix. Best dogs in the world. I will always have a lab in the family especially for the kids and I'm sure I'll be adopting all of them based on my most recent experience. Not much hunting here in my area of NJ so I can't comment on that. Personally I think they're all great but I've found the black to be the calmest and the yellow to be just up from there.
