I don't know why nobody has mentioned this, but these trucks learn shift patterns pretty noticeably. If the truck is still fairly new and low mileage, just keep driving it. My 2022 was pretty terrible when I initially got it but by around 1500-2000 miles the transmission began to shift more normally without constantly going 3 to 4 to 3 and also not bogging the hell out of the motor. Now with 6200 miles the only thing it does is occasionally 2 to 3 to 2 if I start on level ground and start going up a hill which is understandable.

Yea, I’m thinking about just slapping it in manual mode and shifting myself for sure

S mode is not manual mode. It just locks out n+1 gear.

The above post is right. Wait until you roll 1500 miles. The truck will conform to you if you are consistent with your foot.

Get it tuned it will solve all of your issues. Go with the KDMax tune it's the most popular tune here. You won't regret it!

Go toThis thread for more info on the KDMax tune.
Go to This website to find an installer for KDMax.

S mode doesn’t work that way. It just limits the highest gear it will go to.

    Toco-dude,

Get it tuned; check the performance section for detailed info. The trans/shifting/gear hunting becomes a non issue and the shifts are considerably smoother. Gotta do your research for the tune of choice and available in your area. You will most likely, like many, feel it's the best mod you've done to your truck. My 2018 is lifted 1 inch and have heavy 31 inch BFG KO2s and the truck says I get 21-26 mpg depending on how "responsible" I drive. I live at 7200 feet and drive in the the front range of the Rockys. Best mod I've done to date.

Right there with you! I've rented 2 - 2023's recently while traveling and appreciate my Prerunner that much more when I get home. 160k and no issues. I'm not sure I will ever have a truck that has been as reliable ever again.

In about 2-3 years from now. Most of us who complained will be laughing at the 4th gen forum. Haha. Look at those complainers and their turbo lag issues.

I agree it wasn’t designed that way, I do however leave it in S-5 and it does better

I feel the "learning" of the transmission is bogus. I've noticed no change in my 2022 and put 5K miles on it. I got an OVTune recently because it was so annoying and because the tuner was less than an hour from me. It did clean up the shifting a bit but not very much and I don't feel it was worth the price.

I guess I will have to try the KDMax next but the nearest guy is two and a half hours away. I like everything else about the truck but the shifting is crap. I see so many other 3rd gens on the road I can't believe they all mostly put up with this.
