2022 here and no trans issues no shift issues no hunting for gear issues no nothing. And getting 23 mpg or better.
The throttle has a 10 to 15 percent evaluation on pressure just like my wife’s Subaru. Been telling her that for 2 years. When it’s in OD back off the throttle just a bit.

Do the same on my Tacoma.

Glad ur having good luck, I’m thinking about another trip to the dealer, mine can’t be right, I’ve drove it easy, moderate and rough, trying to find that sweet spot, no matter what I do once I maintain a constant speed the slightest little incline sends it into a subtle shudder, typically when it drops under 1400rpm

Make the dealer put a manual in it.

Every day without a tune is just another day of frustration. The issue is not the transmission it’s the POS tune.

Get it tuned and move on with your life.

I’m glad some people have found a way to live with the stock tune, I thought I was one of them until I had a couple of instances where I needed to get away from bad drivers. I’ll just say, I didn’t know I needed a tune until I tried a tune. I bet the majority of people saying they’ve learned to adjust to the stock tune (that was me too) would change their minds if they drove their truck under a good tune. PS…any tuner worth their weight will let you try a tune for free on your truck.

The tunes are not a blanket solution for the problems these trucks have. I’ve tried 3 tunes, all of course advertised to “change the way the truck drives” and here I am about to drive to work with the stock Toyota tune. Not enough, if any difference to me to be worth bothering with. Please contact Toyota. The more people that do, the more likely a real fix can be developed. Some Tacomas with the same drivetrain as your truck (or mine) actually drive awesome. Others, like mine, or yours - not so much.

VB 25 makes a fair point. Every now and then you read where the tune did not resolve the owners problems. This is pretty rare, but it does happen.

It was mentioned previously…. From what I’ve read most tuners will let you test drive their tune free of charge and will flash you back to the factory tune if you decide you don’t want their tune.

From my experience you’ll know if you want the tune in the 1st mile. On my truck it’s literally a night and day difference.

Just curious, what tunes did you try? I’m on KDMax pro 9.0 and I’m telling you, absolutely night and day in every way. I always thought a tune was basically full time ECT, which is not the case.

Sorry OP, I'm 32k miles in and the shudder is still just as bad and annoying as the day I bought it.. Wish I would've been able to notice it on the test drive! Surprisingly enough, I have a coworker with the same truck and he says his doesn't do that but he is an aggressive driver - floor it to the next red light kind of guy. In my opinion, I think it's all in how you drive.

So strange. I have ZERO complaints about the transmission on my 2020. It’s like every other automatic I’ve ever had. I wonder if it comes down to driver habit or what the person is demanding from the truck.

Back in 2013 or so, when gas was $10/gal in England the hosts of "Top Gear" ran a test on gas mileage to answer "What NEW car do I buy to save gas?".

They had an Aston Martin DB9 follow a Prius on the track, the Prius running as hard as the engine/transmission would allow and the DB9 just keeping pace. The DB9 beat the Prius in mpg for that run.

Conclusion ... how you drive has significant impact even on a vehicle that gets normally low mileage.

Had a 2018 with the gear hunting issue. Traded it for a 2020 which doesn't have that issue. The 20 runs like a beast and the way I expect it to. I do not baby it. Had I kept the 18, I would probably have splurged for a tune.

That's exactly how a buddies trd gen3 would work. Hate to say it, but it turned out to be a dog compared to others out there, as dealers told him that there was nothing the matter with the truck. He traded it for a new frontier, and is way happier. I keep saying it, Toyota sells these trucks, but they seemed to run different from others that are similar. You get a good performing one, your one happy owner.

Same for my 2020, For an all stock truck, its about a good as a truck can be. Can't say I baby it either.

I am still waiting to see if mileage is a problem. It is used (timeline, days around the purchase) and the previous owner was an idiot I think. First tank was 17 MPG average. On my 4th or 5th tank I can get 23 on freeway and 20-ish on surface-streets. I think the computer is figuring out that I can manage the skinny pedal better.

Will figure out in a few miles if I can ready 24-ishh on my own without a tune.
