Bak Flip covers

Has anyone drilled the drain holes in their truck bed for the bak flip cover drain hoses? Will it weaken the bed at all? I think I am going to get a bak flip cover but hate the thought of having to drill drain holes into the bed.

 

this is what i did. used some hose barb i found at the homedepot in the lawn sprinkler section. i have one hold bigger than the other because i was going to drill the drain holes bigger then came up with this idea.

I wonder if you could install d rings on the bolts that bolt the bak flip rails to the bed rails,since you cant use the factory cleats anymore?

Just got my BakFlip G2 installed yesterday, of course right out of the shop it starts to rain! I noticed a problem with the drain tubes as they were put just placed in the compartments towards the front of the bed near the cab and of course backed up and leaked into my bed. Luckily, nothing is in it yet, but I might have to do this. I really don't want to drill into the bed as I'm still under warranty being my 'Yota is brand new BUT I think this should've been done from the shop where I had it installed. I could just go back to them and raise a little hell...

 

Bought my 2012 Tacoma double cab this past March. Installed my BakFlip just a month or so ago and was Googling "drill holes in bed of Tacoma" and found this forum.

Man, lots of great ideas-and I like this one the best. I don't seem to have a lot of water accumulate in the bed of my truck - assuming it runs off - but I'm taking my truck loaded with stuff on a 1700 mile round trip this coming weekend and the bed will be full of luggage and Christmas gifts. Sure don't want to test the 'leak proof-ness' of the G2 with all that stuff back there.

I like the idea of the hose barb. Thanks t-frax for posting this simple but effective idea.

If I'm not mistaken, the water runs off into the rails for the bed cover itself, which once were the factory ones from Toyota and then leads on into the drain tubes or off the side of the car. Also, make sure you run your fingers underneath the weatherstripping along the sides of the cover as it warms up it'll all pan out and contour to the bed. I know you installed it some time ago, but hope its not too late.

 

Also just a follow up to Whatapunk's post, I went to home depot 2 nights ago and got the piece in the plumbing section of the store. Also as stupid as it sounds, make sure the packaging matches for the 2 barbs. I didn't realize that there was more barbs on one over another. If it doesn't matter to you then get what you need to get no big deal. I got the smaller brass hose barb, 3/8'' I think it is? And so far so good, had 2 days of non stop rain and it's holding up. I really don't want to drill bigger holes in the bed of my truck either as I'm under pretty much a brand new warranty which is why I went to the smaller barb for now...down the road I might have to get the bigger one.

 

Thanks - I did do that when it was warm. That photo was right after I had installed it, but shortly after I smoothed out the weatherstripping.

You are so right - you have to be careful. I actually bought the 1/4 inch ones. They work fine - not a tight friction fit, but since installation we've had rain, and my bed has remained dry. I'm actually very pleased!

 

My bed (so far) is dry. Aside from that whoops the shop made with the drain tubes. I went out again last night and got myself 4 hose clamps and with my brother's help put 1 each on the 2 drain tubes to secure the tube to the bed rail and to hold the hose barb in place on the tubes so hopefully no water leaks. I just need to get some pieces of teflex tape from my uncle to secure the barbs in the bed drain holes. But for now I'm leaving it be and hope the weatherstripping pans out for me as I got a few pieces that haven't settled yet. Supposed to rain here in a few days for at least 2 days. So it'll be a true test.
