Just got some parts to service my pike....my ripley has been down since December because of the scratched stanchion. I've been lazy with getting parts/trying to do the work. Hopefully I can fix it tomorrow or saturday so I can ride my ripley next week.

I figure I am going to pull the lowers off since the scratch is behind the crown, maybe replace the old foam rings (the kit I go has like 3 sets) and leave the old seals in case my scratch repair isn't good enough. wish me luck haha

Out of curiosity, do carbon cranks offer any better performance, or does it come down to weight savings? With the standard New England tech and rocks, I beat the ever living hell out of my crank arms. I have the protectors on the arms, but those are a wear item that needs replacement every so often.

I had a set of GX carbon cranks and never noticed anything different in weight or ride characteristics.

Weight savings. If you're riding rocks on a low bike (and don't care much about weight), stick with alloy or there is always Ti to get the best of both.

Weight, on paper. Real world its pretty tough to 'feel' any improvement. Plastic cranks can take way more beating than keyboard warriors will admit, but if you know you're gonna be bashing them, stick with metal.

I would imagine stiffness too? I know there is a huge difference in stiffness on my carbon gravel bike vs aluminum road bike. It probably only really matters if you have a carbon frame to go with the carbon cranks, otherwise all that flex is going to the frame. I've never owned carbon cranks so I'm just curious haha

You're probably correct that carbon cranks are stiffer to some degree than alloy, on a graph. I'd be extremely skeptical that any real world stiffness could be perceived by any non-world competitive stage rider haha. Frame composition is much more easily 'felt' as your dealing with a larger fulcrum spectrum...or some other science word.
    :spy:

not at the moment...but seriously, check out the 'deals' tab on the Cane Creek website. They have a handful of forks that might fit your needs. Mostly 27.5 at the moment

yeah it probably isn't noticeable unless you are super competitive where every 1% matters haha

dang, I was just hoping haha. I'm having thoughts I shouldn't be having and thinking of trying a coil fork out. I may browse pinkbike for a bit haha.

And jumping in late to the game as usual,
I'm love my shimano shifting components way moretthan the other brand available.
But of course the new bike came all xo1 and it feels bad to switch so soon.

    However, 20230309_162047.jpg
And I'm working on a backup project so...
Anyone with some insight on a 130/140mm fox fork keep me posted.
