There has to be a part to buy that threads into the oil filter area that prevents the spill from getting everywhere. I am referring to the excess that leaks from the filter upon removal. The catch basin spill doohickey.

I'm guessing you got the 2.7 engine.

There’s a drain nipple on the bottom. Stick a piece of tubing on it and run it down out the bottom of the truck or set a bottle under it to catch the oil.

I just cut a quart bottle in half and hold it under the spout while changing the the filter and clean the drain catch with some brake cleaner when done, it all drains nicely in the catch bottle and no mess.
If you prefer it to drain out the bottom just get you a few feet of 3/8 in hose, a hose clamp, and a few zip ties and route it to a location of your choice under the truck

Agree about the drain on the back, there’s a little black cover that needs to be pulled off. Mine was never removed so the drain was kind of gunked up first time using it. I needed to poke a thin plastic piece down the hole the first timing using it to clear it out. I put a water bottle on the drain outlet and let it catch it, there’s not a lot that comes out. I have all the tubing to route it to the catch bucket but haven’t had the urgency to route it yet.

I use a section of .5' tubing (I.D) approximately 3' long. Fits the nipple and will perfectly extend through the hole in stock off road 'skid plate'.

Never had a problem, or a single drip.

Same, although I route it down and around the skid plate. I also have a hose coming out of the Fumoto valve on the pan. Super clean and easy.

Even with the plug on the base plate removed, oil can spill out. To avoid that, rotate the oil filter slowly. Stop when oil starts draining out and proceed slowly when it stops.

I had mine done recently at the shop because my 2007 2.7L was in there for some other things. Next time I may change the oil myself. A couple of videos I watched included a new washer for the drain plug. Are the washers specifically made for oil pans? On my former Subarus I'd reuse the them, and they were just metal. The washers I saw for the Tacoma oil pans in the videos had I believe a rubber portion on the gasket, 14mm I believe. I'd like to buy some to have on hand.

the 4.0L v6 is probably the cleanest oil change out of any vehicle I have ever had the pleasure doing.

Heres how to do it in 15 EASY steps (with a few key bolded steps)

    1. Buy 6 pack of BOTTLED beer on your way home
    2. Pop the hood to let truck cool upon arriving home
    3. Crack a beer from what you just bought and sip on it while the truck cools off and unwind from the day over the next 15-30min (if you are a fast drinker crack a second or third if its light beer)
    4. Crack another beer to start the process of work for the upcoming oil change
    5. Gather tools
    6. Place drain pan under engine and remove drain plug to start draining engine oil
    7. Place a now empty long neck under oil filter housing with the drain nipple in the mouth of the long neck,
The long neck (due to its length and rigidity) wedges perfectly between rad hose and serpentine belt.:wink:
    8. Undo oil filter enough so oil starts draining out and into used/empty beer bottle
    9. Crack another beer to start the process of finishing the oil change
    10. Spin off filter completely and clean mating surface, spin on new filter of your choice
    11. REMOVE beer bottle from below oil filter
    12. Replace drain plug on oil pan
    13. Fill with 5ish qts of whatever 5w-30 of your choice
    14. Replace oil fill cap
    15. Crack a final celebratory beer because there are no drips, spills or leaks while running after your successful oil change.

Put an empty water bottle under it.

    Problem solved. It's not complicated

Those are crush washers and you are supposed to change them on every oil change... On every vehicle no matter the make or model. You also don't have to specifically use the Toyota ones. I use bare aluminum crush washers from Amazon and they work fine.

Crush washers - ok thanks. I'll definitely change mine if I do it myself.

I used a tube my first few changes but it really doesn't drip all that much oil so I ultimately went to a method where I just put a few paper towels into a doubled plastic grocery bag stuffed under that nipple. Let it drain, screw on the new filter, then pop the rubber cap back on before you remove the bag.
