Coming home tonight my truck started running rough right as I was getting off the freeway. As I was sitting at the light to turn right my CEL came on but was blinking. As well as my trac light and VSC light were on. It felt like it was low on power also when tried to step on it to go up a hill by my house.

As soon as I got home I noticed not only was it running rough but It also had a louder then normal “Tacoma tick”. I had my friend @cemented come over and scan the truck and it gave us the P0302 code. Ended up replacing the coil pack… still runs rough and has the louder noise. We moved coils around nothing changed. Pulled the plug and it looked fine…

I’m out of energy for tonight… any ideas??

I think a compression test would be in order, that sounds like a mechanical issue.

Yea. I’m gonna have to have someone look at it… don’t have any testing capabilities

P0302 is one of the codes that came on the evening beofe my engine destroyed itself with a blown head gasket. I thought it just had a bad coil pack. I had not noticed any change in oil level but that afternoon it did seem to use some radiator fluid and run slightly rough after starting. The next morning every light came on and the engine overheated badly before I could find a safe place to get off the freeway. I know the 2007 is not supposed to be in the bad gasket window----but-----.

Everything you said in your post is what my truck did. All of the lights came on. Up until then there was never any hint other than a slight stutter occasionally upon start. All the lights came on as you described and then shortly thereafter the engine failed completely. I would be very suspicious of a failed head gasket and pending destruction including over heating if you continue to drive it.

The evening before all this happened I got a CEL and a code P0302.

For me, it happened 1500 miles from home on a freeway in Miami that had no place for me to pull over. Between the time all of the lights came on and the engine overheated was a couple of minutes.

Next steps after compression loss is found is a leak down test to see if the problem is in the head, gasket, or rings

Good, maybe with a little luck you can be fixed up. A head gasket is no small thing but fixing a head gasket is much preferable to replacing an engine.

Has anyone considered doing an oil change and looking at your oil. I bet you find A LOT of metal. Rod Knock. No point in paying a mechanic all this money to tell you your engine is blown when you can find out yourself for free.

If your oil comes up clean, and you're still clueless, tow it to your mechanic. Don't run the engine.
