White, brown, blue, gas, electric, doesn’t matter as long as I can still be a lazy piece of shit and get stuff I probably don’t need delivered to my doorstep.

This is the first time I’ve seen R1S’s available in the R1 Shop.

My tonneau cover finally broke. Now the wait to see how long it takes Rivian to release the new and improved design they’ve been working on for a year or so. They could have avoided this whole problem by just using a tonneau made by an existing company rather than designing their own overly complex version.

I think it has only been 6 months since they removed the powered tonneau from production. How far are you from a service center?

About an hour away so not bad. I have a mobile service appointment Wednesday to get the passenger B pillar panel clips replaced. I submitted a service request to see if the tonneau can be fixed at the same time or at least retracted the rest of the way.

Can you take it off and just get a normal cover by another manufacturer?

I could take it off but I’m hoping the service tech can repair it. There are a couple aftermarket ones available now, the roll up vinyl style. Rivian should have contracted with Retrax and incorporated their aluminum slatted power roll up tonneau. I’m sure some engineer had fun designing this complex mechanism but it’s proven to be unreliable since before the trucks even went into production.

The configuration that I have been waiting for is still scheduled to deliver this May-June so I would have jumped on one of these Launch Editions if it matched my configuration but otherwise why not get exactly what I want and just wait a little longer.

Maybe they'll drop more like Tesla since they're cutting it down

I thought they were building it up. When did they start cutting it down?

Seems like you are just posting non sense in your quest for 50 posts so that you can sell something.

Not Rivian. Tesla. Tesla has declared a massive price war. They’ve dropped prices ~$8000 overnight on the 3/Y, many more cars now qualify for the $7500 tax credit, making the cars $15.5k cheaper than the day before. Tesla is one of the most profitable car companies per unit. They can absorb the profit loss, unlike most other EVs manufacturers.

I don’t think you’ll see much cutting of prices on R1’s. When you place an order today, you see the higher price so the expectation that you will actually pay less than that is quite small. I think the expectation that the price will go up again is bigger. What will make people cancel their preorders is a competitive solution from another manufacturer or of course Rivian having bigger issues.

Tesla dropped prices on all of their cars, not just 3/Y. When I got my Plaid, I got it for almost $20k less than retail because I had a day one preorder on a Plaid + that got converted to a Plaid. You can get the same car, now with shiny red brake calipers, a larger rear screen, and even a steering wheel if you want, for $5k less than what I paid. Tesla is a completely different position that Rivian, which allows them to make these cuts. Rivian is still trying to grow and any reduction in margin slows that growth.

For the goof, I just looked up the cost of an R1T as I am also seeing them around town.

The finances just don’t make sense for me. Given the roughly $30,000 price difference between the R1T and the Tacoma TRD OR, and using a $.23 per mile cost advantage for the R1T, it will take me 130,000 miles to recoup the cost difference.

I traded in my 2010 Tacoma with only 120,000 miles on the truck after 12 years of ownership.

Even adding in the cost of oil changes and maintenance on the Tacoma that I would not need on an R1T, it seems it’ll take at least a decade to bring the EV costs in alignment with the Tacoma.

It seems EV’s are still only reasonable for people driving 25,000+ miles per year (or collectors / EV enthusiasts where financial calculations don’t matter).

It really doesn’t make sense from a cost breakeven perspective when compared to a Tacoma, no argument there. It makes sense when you realize that you have a much nicer truck that can outperform pretty much everything a Tacoma can do and is cheaper to operate. The added performance benefits come at a substantial cost.

Compared to higher end truck like my TRX the R1T makes sense. Lower purchase price and lower operating costs.

If you just want to buy a commuter there are a number of EVs that are the same price as a gas car and will save money. A luxury truck is definitely not one of them.

Even the Tacoma OR doesn't make sense in that argument when you can get an SR5 for cheaper.

The rivian is a completely different class of vehicle. Financially the rivian makes ZERO sense, in any manner. It's a vehicle where you are buying what you WANT not what you NEED.

Personally I'm excited for rivian. Looks to be yet another new US automobile manufacture, we live in an amazing time!
