Hey guys I have a 2023 tacoma with 500 miles on it. I was on highway today and noticed around 50-60mph I can hear a slight “ringing”/“whine” from the rear of the truck not sure how to exactly describe it but it kinda goes away when I let off the throttle. It’s not super loud but noticeable. Is this normal? 2023 sr5 v6

That’s odd, I heard somewhere it’s just frequency noise . Yours does it?

People have had some success with different gear oils but other than the noise it hasn't had any affect with longitivity.

Noises are mostly subjective to how you interpret them, so "ringing" could mean a lot of things to lots of people. I regeared my diffs to 5.29 and they make the same amount of noise that they did stock, which is barely any noise at all. Normal gear noise, but that's all. Nothing worse than I've ever heard from any other diff.

However, my transmission now truly sings in 6th gear at 70+ as a result of spinning so much faster from the 5.29s. I let it sing, I still go 80 at 3400. I think of it as a free concert. Mostly kidding, it is annoying, but harmless and radio drowns it out. It is a ringing noise similar to that of a whistling tea kettle. It's a manual and they are not known for being silent in general. Automatics are usually quiet in comparison to manuals.

You have a big rectangle echo chamber right above diff.. plus with not much rear cab sound deadening the Tacoma has, that why you hear it more than most other makes.

Yes a bit, but tonneau cover made it quieter, plus once it warms up here, I plan on sound deadening. My 2nd gen howled as well.

i have the diff whine or drive train drone, whatever the cause is. changing the diff gear oil to amsoil SG had no effect whatsoever on quieting or changing the tone.

Wasting time in my opinion. Like said they been doing it since 2nd gen came out. Some have had luck changing to different gear lube.

What about the guys who claim replacing the differential fixes the issues? Why do some make this noise and others don’t ?
