Is the 3rd gen 4 cylinder that slow?

Going with the 4cyl isn’t a bad idea for your purposes. I would go with the access cab because it is a little lighter.

A 4cyl has some advantages over a 6cyl in the way of reliability. An in-line engine has a lot fewer parts to fail and when they do the repairs are usually simpler.

2019 I4,Auto, I have one and it does everything that I ask it to do, even plow snow. The one point that it does lack IMHO is the ability to pass/accelerate when you want to. I believe there is about 1 mpg difference between the 6 and the 4cyl. I wouldn't sell my truck because of it but the next one will be a 6 for me.

Not having 4 wheel drive and having a 4 cylinder will give you a high payload. I had a 2009 Suzuki Equator (think Nissan Frontier) in that configuration. I drove in flat Indiana with a 430 pound atv in the bed and an Arctic Cat SXS in tow. No squat. Not fast but 62mph on flat all day long.

I would say drive one and see.
I liked my 2nd gen, regular cab, manual transmission with the 4 cylinder.

A supercharged 4cyl might actually be more reliable than the 3.5.

Idk, there's plenty of those 3.5's on the roads today, where I haven't heard they were. Water company has had a fleet of them since they came out in the taco's. I know one of the workers well that drives them...says their extremely reliable.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
The time you get there all depends on the time you leave. Get the 4 cyl

Like others have said, test drive and decide for yourself. I’ve never driven a dual cab 4 cylinder. I test drove a DCSB v6 and a 4 cylinder access cab long bed. I picked the access cab long bed 4 cylinder to best fit my needs for a larger bed and proven reliable engine. No regrets!

If it wasn't the rusty frame, I would have kept my 2nd gen 2.7 with 5MT forever.

I've done cruising at 90mph. It's not fast, but adequate .
