So about 6 months ago I had to order a new air filter housing for my taco because the piece that connects the box to the motor (that has the MAF sensor on it) broke off. So here I am once again with the same problem. This time instead of buying a new housing I stuck this one back together with some jb weld and did several layers. Anybody else have this problem?

thanks for the link to this...

as you seen in the other thread people suggested i let it sit for over 24hrs...

i take it your 15 hours was enough and didnt ruin the MAF sensor

Well longer would be better I guess but the thing is I had to get up and leave the next morning and this is my daily driver and no my maf sensor is fine. I took mine completely out mine wasn't all the way broken off so I went ahead and pulled it apart. Then I cleaned the surface and sanded it smooth and then you glue it. Just make sure you have the maf sensor turned the right way when you put it back on or it will screw everything up. The maf hole should align with the hold in the airbox that goes out under the fender.

Like my post said before I ordered this airbox brand new when my old one did the same thing. Idk whats up with these housings but I'm not putting another 100 bucks on it when I can go get jb weld for 5.

    Good luck!:)

Oh yes, I dealt with a break in the same place. A not uncommon problem on these V6 Tacomas IIRC. Repaired it a couple times before buying a new box. The new box split hairline at the same spot right away again. Sent it back and got a replacement box but this time I also ordered a new "rubber" air intake hose.

I am convinced, having compared the new rubber to the old hardened rubber hose, that flexibility is key to the health of the air filter box connection. If you envision a rigid pipe, as opposed to the rubber hose, connecting the air intake chamber on top of the engine to the air filter box connector, you can see the box connector is the weakest link and would be pulled apart by the minute flexion that occurs as the engine torques over time.

The new hose had much more flexibility when compared to the old which was nearly rigid by comparison. This was on a Tacoma V6 with about 150k on it. 11k miles later the new box is still good.

Wow I never really thought about the hose... Might have to end up replacing that but as for now my jb weld job is still holding up. Thanks for the info I know where to go next now if it rebreaks.

Any Toyota Dealer. The part number (for 95-99 anyway) is, "17881-0C010, Hose, Intake Air". About $60.

My air filter housing also cracked in that same spot. It wasn't totally broke off so I used Great Stuff Ultra Black on it. That worked for a couple of years until it started to release again. As pointed out above, the hose loses alot of flexibility with age and this in turn stresses the junction of the tube with the box during normal engine movements. This problem is probably exasperated by manual transmissions and how much the engine moves around during gear shifts.

Instead if buying a Dorman air filter housing for $465  I decided to fix my old one. I also looked at a Genuine Toyota replacement it is over $1,000 MSRP!

I designed and 3D printed, out of ABS-M30 a two-piece flange to secure the MAF tube section to the box. I finished this off with stainless nylock nuts and Ultra Black sealant. Hopefully this idea helps others.

It would also be a good idea for everyone to check the condition of their filter housings. Sucking dusty unfiltered air into the engine is horrible for it. As these 1st gens age expect to see more of these failures.20230311_144152.jpg 20230311_144245.jpg 20230311_212554.jpg

    Thank you.
Good question. This forum is a good historical resource and keeping things condensed in one thread for future use isn't such a bad thing IMO. I guess I didn't see the point in starting a new thread if I had a solution to the OP despite the fact he probably doesn't even own the truck anymore. :D
