3rd gen trans driving me nuts !

Just to add, I havent had any odd shifting on the brief period of time I've driven my 2017. Both city and highway use but no real hauling.

 

Exactly. And Toyota isn’t exactly giving discounts on the ones that run like shit. Or even acknowledging the problem in a reasonable manner. We paid what people paid for ones that drive nice. Hurts.

 

Sadly it crawls....... you can't out run many cars since it's a truck.

 

Depends what cars. My truck is no slug.....Not quite as fast, but it has surprised the crap out some much faster cars.

 

See, this just makes me sad. My kids prius-c would give my truck a run for its money

 

Know what, try unplugging the acis valve that's on the back of the manifold. 10 seconds to plug or unplug and us manual guys believe it makes the low end shudder better. Might be worth a shot for you

 

I'm going to be completely honest -- my '23 is one of the smoothest, best-shifting trucks I've ever had. I feel like the responsiveness is spot on 100% of the time. I can basically tell it what I want the transmission to do with the lightest change in pressure on the gas pedal. If I want it to upshift, I let off a hair. If I want it to downshift, a slight increase in pressure on the gas pedal. If I want it to hold the current gear because the hill is quite small, I keep steady pressure.

Have you guys that have this issue - tried somehow to reset the transmission that "learns" our patterns? I can't help but think it's related to that technology somehow...as some of us obviously have "more steady" feet, etc than others...maybe the system is like "confused"?

Sad thing is I was the one who bought it.
When shopping for used cars to get a 16 yr old the 200,000 mile Prius seemed a better buy than the 100,000 mile vw. Plus the young girl we bought it from really needed the money and was going to get chewed down in price from the next buyer.

Really can't complain. 240,000 miles and it runs great. Gets 45 mpg, which is perfect for a teen working 15 hours a week in her first job

We still have a 2012 prius the wife uses. While its a good economical car for basic transportation, its no rocket, never was. After driving the truck, the power in the prius feels like an old vw bug. Its probably a lot more reliable though.

 

That's exactly the same way my 2020 tacoma is. You have to wonder what some are complaining about.

 

What on the transmission learns your driving style and where is that information stored?

If there was a mod to get around what ever mythical device this is, I'm sure it would be a sticky on here. Like the accumulator delete mod.

Err, learning algorithms have been in transmissions for the past couple decades. My 05 Chevy had it and it was simply in the eeprom in the TCM.

None of that is going to learn and adjust to how each individual drives a vehicle. The transmission can learn how to operate to the engine that it's bolted to.

Those are two different things.

 

I like this guys videos, but that sounds like BS.

 

The transmission adjusts shift times and engagement speeds based upon average engine loads and power demands.

It doesn't learn "how you drive" but it can learn the average loading, frequency of demand, how often demand changes, etc.
It's adapting to the most common load patterns the engine is operating under, etc.

If it can record parameters to match to the engine then it can absolutely record parameters that relate to how the operator uses it

 

Yeah, many of the folks who unplug it feel they lose top end
