I was wondering the same? Comparing a 23 Tacoma to 23 Frontier. Build quality and materials quality seem evenly matched.

Looking at their forum there are no glaring issues like “my transmission sucks and doesn’t know what to do” or similar problems. Some crying about placement of buttons and switches, turning radius, but no actual issues just design preferences.

Only thing I saw was the 2022 transmission recall on certain units that it doesn’t fully go into park which I guess was remedied for 2023. Didn’t look further much into it.

It doesn’t say Toyota on it. If it did the Toyota fan boys would love it.

The parking pawl was the only recall, I can remember. There may have been another one early on the 22s but what they may have been IDK.

I'm not sure how the Jatco 9spd is, but I've never heard any complaints about. Certainly not in Comparison to the 6spd in the Tacoma.

Less aftermarket, less complaints about the stock truck is my conclusions.

Design and styling and which ever truck you prefer are about the only differences. There's resale value, which puts the buyer of the used Nissan at an advantage over the buyer of the used Tacoma.

You definitely get a better deal on a used Frontier and I’ve found some new at $2,500 off MSRP (which can be found on Tacoma as well). If Nissan offered a manual I would’ve actually given it a better look.

I like the new frontier but it already feels dated and they just released it. It is finally competitive with the third gen taco but still manages to feel cheaper in some metrics. I personally think the fit and finish of interior materials are cheaper feeling and look less modern than the taco. The auto transmission is decidedly better in terms of performance than the taco. The engine feels more “old school” and truck like, but it also feels rougher and less refined than the 2gr. I wouldn’t trust a modern Nissan to hold up as well as a Toyota past the 200k mile mark. My friends who has owned 4 frontiers always traded them in before they reach that higher mileage because he simply doesn’t trust them. The new frontier will feel atrociously dated when the 4th gen taco comes out. I hope the 2.4l feels as good as it does in the new NX. I test drove one and was pleasantly surprised with how smooth and refined the engine felt. It reminded me of a 4cly Honda, the undisputed JDM kings of making beautifully smooth engines.

I'd like the Frontier more if it didn't have an infotainment screen or push to start, I'd also get rid of the power driver seat on the SV. I like the looks of the S better. The only thing I'd add that nissan does not have on the S. Would be the LED headlights rear locker and heated mirrors.

The last thing I need in a midsize is the infotainment screen, cameras and power seats. I don't need a sunroof, terrain monitor hell, I don't even need rear seats.

I can't remember if this has already been discussed (in detail, anyway), but how big of a difference should we expect coils in the rear to make in the ride quality?

And should we expect major advancements up front?

I don’t trust Nissan transmissions. Not just the cvts.

Well the Tacoma transmission isn’t exactly winning awards based on everyone here!

Nissan is decent equipment. At the very least, it's nowhere *near* bad enough to warrant trashing in a Gen 4 Taco thread.

Toyota already uses a 6-speed with the 2.4L turbo hybrid…would not be surprised to see that on the Pro and Limited.

I think nissan is doing ok considering the Ghosn scandal!! I see a ton of new frontiers on the road and considering toyota and nissan stuck with midsized pickups when most left the scene and went suv, as long as they stay ahead of the truck market they should and i still see older frontiers going pretty strong and that in the northeast where the salt ruins most vehicles got to say something. i just wish the mini truck scene didn't get left behind something toyota and nissan had a great following! these little maverick things are bearly pickups at all a bag of groceries fills the bed.

Most automotive journalists don’t think too highly of it either.

How is Japan doing as an economy? IDK, but just looking at their automotive brands Honda, Nissan, and even Toyota they don't seem to be in a good position at the moment.

Managing additional gears & adaptive programming with the turbo’s unique boost characteristics, while trying to squeeze every last mpg out of a multipurpose vehicle used for towing, off roading and commuting will always require some tricky engineering.

They’ll never please everyone equally but I suspect that Toyota is leaning very hard on new Tundra owners right now for constructive input that will be applied into Taco4.
