Code without a code reader process

Does anyone know how to retrieve the service engine code without a code reader?
2012 Tacoma 4 cylinder

 

There is no way to get codes from the PCM without a code reader.
You can get one that will read codes and basic engine data for under$50

 

Go to Autozone, Oreillys, advanced auto. One of them will pull code for free

 

Service engine light is different from the engine light.

 

Service Engine Soon, Check Engine Light, CEL, Engine Light, all the same thing.

Some older GMs had a Service Vehicle Soon light that was for oil change reminder but Toyota uses the Maint Reqd light for that.

 

Go to auto parts store. Get code. Report back

 

Truck turns over but won’t start , that’s why I was asking about getting the code without a code reader.
I would normally pull a plug wire to check for fire and release the check valve on in the fuel rail to check for fuel delivery but dads 2012 (the problem truck)is completely different than my 99.

 

There's a few basic things you can check without a scan tool:
Does the Check Engine Light come on with the key on?
Does the Tach move while cranking?

 

Yes the check engine light comes on and yes I noticed the rpm going up when it was cracked over.

 

Have someone hit on the bottom of the fuel tank while you crank on it, if it's a fuel pump it might make it take off again.
Did the truck die or did it just not want to start one day?

 

I noticed the gas dummy light on , put 20$ in to get me home and parked it. The following morning it wouldn’t start.

 

How many miles did you drive after getting fuel. Any chance you're out of fuel?

 

So it can be assumed it has gas in it?
I would do the smack on the tank test.

 

It registered almost a 1/4 and I put another 2 gallons in it just in case.
I’ll try the tank hit in the morning.

 

I’d look at a fueling issue because it happened right after.

Of course it would be easier to connect an obd reader. You have a friend or neighbor who owns one? Or post where you live and maybe a TW member will help.

Open the gas cap and smell the tank. In case you got some stale gas.

 

So we had a mobile mechanic come look at it and he said the fuel pump was out.
He spent 3 hrs replacing the pump.
Nothing changed.
He attempted to get it going until 11pm and called it quits. He said the only code other than an o2 sensor was a “startability issue “ and he gave up.
So now it turns over and almost starts sometimes but never actually stays running.

 

What trouble shooting led to the failed fuel pump?

Were you there when the pump was pulled?? I wonder just what the sock looked like?

At anytime was the fuel pressure checked? Enough dirt was stirred up then set up in the fuel filter over night.

It sure would be nice to know the code.

Almost starts sounds more like a fuel issue then ignition.

How was it determined the fuel pump was bad or was it just a guess?

O2 sensor codes won't cause a no start.
Startability fault is an effect code, it means the engine failed to start or started and immediately stalled.

I'm guessing power and ground were not checked at the fuel pump while it was out?

Have you pulled a fuel line off at the engine and checked if fuel comes out while cranking?

 

No fuel filter on 2nd gen, the sock is the filter and it gets replaced with the pump assembly.

 

Just a force of habit I think Fuel Pump I think filter.
