Got bored the other day and went around to all the stores near me. I see sazerac rye posted in here all the time so thought I'd give it a go. Found another Blanton's and my first Eagle Rare. Time to give that a try too.

I think Eagle Rare is a good bottle for $35 but nothing to write home about. I’m curious to know what you think.

I tried my first pour of ER the other night. It might be blasphemous to say, but I wasn't all that impressed. It seemed a little.... bland, maybe. No flavors or notes stood out, to me. I will admit, it could have been the migraine or the two shots of Rittenhouse I took before. I'm willing to give it another shot (no pun intended) at another time, before I make my final conclusion.

I like Eagle Rare. Actually, I often like it more than Blanton’s. I used to not be crazy about it, but it’s really grown on me. When I want a nice easy neat sipper with some comfortable flavors and a bit of complexity, but nothing spicy or hot, it’s a reliable go to. It doesn’t knock my socks off but I’m happy to drink it. It’s not a top shelf bourbon but it’s a good one.

People have hyperbolic reactions to it in either direction due to the hype. Set that aside, and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Plus, tastes vary significantly from palate to palate.

Yeah, behind Rittenhouse, you probably wouldn't get much out of ER. I do really like ER, but I'm not one of those guys that like really high-proof bourbon.

It's a fine whiskey for the $40 MSRP. I gladly drink it if paying that price.

The hype is completely undeserved and borderline comi-tragic at this point in my ever so humble opinion.

I feel the exact same way about Blanton's.

This right here is the correct more detailed take.

I've never been one to give too much bias when it comes to hype. I go in to almost everything, hype or not, with an open mind. I just open a bottle, pour an once or two into a Glencairn, let it breathe a bit, give it a few sniffs, a few or several more sniffs if I like the nose, then finally take a sip with the mindset I'm going to like it until proven wrong.

For lack of a better word, the Eagle Rare to me was just blah. The nose wasn't that great either. After the bottle has sat a while, I'll come back to it with a fresh palate (minus the Rittenhouse first) and give it another go. Maybe I'm Plain Jane, but for my every-day sipper, I'll take a $23 bottle of Larceny. Buffalo Trace also works well enough for me neat or in a sour.

I think this was previously stated, but drinking any bourbon directly after a spicy rye is going to lead to the bourbon tasting flatter than it otherwise would.

ER can be so hard to find, so since you’ve already acquired a bottle, I hope you get to enjoy it.

I've been hanging on to the bottle for months for that reason. I was waiting until I had another bottle, but I got tired of waiting.

I'm still waiting for an occasion to crack this one. I suppose I could put on "Nothing Else Matters" when I do!

Try Evan Williams White Label Bonded, you absolutely can't beat the price for an everyday sipper.

Straight Mid at best. It's basic and overrated.

On my last tour at JD a month ago, they were on their first day of bottling the 12-year-old. Of course, it was not on the tasting menu.:annoyed: So all I could get was a picture.
    FE0878EA-1A32-48BF-8A7D-22D5E3B0FADF.jpg

EDIT: If I recall correctly, our tour guide said there would be something like 6500 bottles produced.
