Rear diff whistle/slight howl.

I’m about ready to buy another one I won’t be able to live with this noise it’s driving me insane

 

Mine was made in Baja as well.

It did until I did the gear swap. I listened to the howl from 500 miles until 15,800 miles. Then I swapped to 5.29s in prep for lift and tires.

 

Drive you crazy right? I can’t stand it

 

Made me think less of my purchase. I hated it but fortunately I had the tunes going most trips.

I did want to return it at one point when my brother rode in it and called out the howl.

I kept it because I’m in love with the look and the crazy amount of things you can do to the truck. It’s a great platform for a build. If I was keeping it stock I might have returned it.

 

This^ maybe changing one thing of the system will get rid of the howl? Who knows. I’m living with it for now. I wasn’t expecting a new rear diff when I took mine in, I was more curious to see what they would say. But they replaced it and it’s definitely better but still present. Maybe try getting a new diff through warranty? Or put a lift and some tires on it to change things up. I’m planning on a lift with new rear springs and shocks soon so maybe that will get rid of the resonance? Anyways it’s an annoyance for sure and for some it’s no biggie others might want to look for another vehicle. I hear the ridgline is super quiet …if you can live with it there’s quite a few threads on this issue if you look up “rear differential howl”. Happy reading and keep us posted.

 

I’m pricing out another 2023 try my luck with one more I cannot deal with this noise long term. No way no how

 

Definitely take it on a long test drive. Sometimes it doesn’t show up for a few hundred miles or even a few thousand miles for some. Good luck

I bought and installed just the 2 dampers on mine. It didnt make a difference.
The tsb includes leaf spring replacement also so maybe one thing works on some trucks and the other works on others.

 

It really is the luck of the draw, as you COULD buy another three trucks and have the same howl. Maybe the next one won't.

FWIW (and before the Baja vs Texas stuff goes any further), my '16 had the howl, and now my '19 has it.... both built in Texas.

 

Take it back to the dealer (or another dealer if the first won't fix). Local dealer here rebuilt my dad's 2020 rear diff due to whining and it's been fine ever since.
(My 2020 never had the whine)

 

Going to check fluid level today first but yeah I’ll do that

 

Well, I'm 70 years old, maybe that helps, but I've heard a buddies 2019 have a constant faint whistle, or whatever you call it once over 40 mph, but he had other issues with the truck he just couldn't put up with. I can tell you these trucks will make more wind noise if you pull off the front chin spoiler.

 

I’m just beyond frustrated with my last 2 tacomas.I should have never got rid of my 2020 Trd sport. Mine makes noises even at slow speeds and going around turns . You can hear the diff howling when you roll the windows down so it’s got nothing to do with nvh and actually the tsb will prob not help. A rear diff should not be making noise on a brand new truck plain and simple

 

You need to find another dealer or complain to toyota corporate to set up a case file if its that bad. Heck, my 2020 is as quiet as any truck, or car i've ever driven.

Mine has the typical Toyota whine between 45-50 mph. Not before and not after. Accel/Decel, same, same.

Sounds exactly like the Toyota whine in my 2006 T4R at the same speeds.

It's part of the Toyate charm.

Sounds like OP's is different, tho...

 

Shimming is off in differential. Call corporate then find a better dealer
