My '05 V6 had the original DENSO plugs which should be replaced at 90k miles per the scheduled maintenance. I procrastinated until it had 96k and figured since I'll procrastinate in the future, I'd go with high end iridium plugs that are rated for 150k.

I special ordered NGK LFR6AIX-11 IRIDIUM-IX's at $8.50 each, gapped them at 0.043" per the manual's spec, and--I wouldn't believe it if the manufacturer made this claim--there was a noticeable increase in power and I'm at a loss to explain why.

The original plugs looked in very good shape except for normal electrode arc erosion that opened the gaps to a tight 0.045". Iridium alloy is denser and tougher than titanium and handles much higher temperatures, but I think those characteristics only reduce electrode arc erosion. Because iridium is even rarer than platinum (only about 3 tons produced per year) the center electrode is made tiny compared to standard electrodes, so it does have a different geometry. Does that help improve power?

I don't know if replacing the original plugs with the same type would have increased engine power, but I do know that the iridium plugs did. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

By the way, I torqued the new plugs to the NGK website's recommended 18-21.5 pounds per foot for 14mm threads in aluminum heads (I went with 18), and that amounted to about 1 full turn after hand contact using anti-sieze. The images on the plug boxes seem to suggest 1/2 to 2/3 turn after hand contact. The Haynes manual calls for 36 lbs/ft which seems way to high.

so technically you mis-posted because if you got rear-ended, you didn't do anything to your taco...

that's lame tho man...my truck has been in 3 accidents and neither one was my fault, once i wasn't even in the same state or even time zone!

first i was in florida when some drunken idiot ran into the car parked behind me and still had enough juice to hit my back left and push my truck up on a curb and forward 5 feet!

second time i got my back left smacked into by an 80 yr old guy who shouldn't even have had his license (the cop agreed with me) and ran a red light..

third, and hopefully final time..my buddy drunkenly backed into the front right corner of my truck...he didn't want to go through insurance so i got $$ for it and bam! new ARB!

hope the damage wasn't bad to your truck and she's repairable and hopefully those bastards had insurance!
