Best off-road tires and wheels for 23 TRD Sport

    Just curious what size wheel and off-road tire would fit best without lift, cutting, or rubbing?

    Thinking of going down to 16 in wheel
    Since the 23 sport comes with 17 in.

    let me know thoughts or suggestions.

    255/85/16 (33x10)

    You do get more choices in 17”.
    Such as 275/70/17 (32x11) and more ATs in 255/80/17 size.

    I have the OEM TRD Lift/Level (2"f/1"R) installed on my 23' TRD OR. I was considering installing 285/75/16 (32.8x11.2). Will the 285's require trimming or spacers to make them work? In so, I think the 255/85 may be my go to.

    With stock OR wheels, yes will need spacers or you will rub UCA.

    255s are awesome. True 33 tire that has less rolling resistance and weighs less than E rated 285s. Well and 255s are better off-road in some cases.

    255/85/16” are pretty much all mud terrains except for couple hybrid tires.

    Forgot to add: with 285s, stock OR wheels and spacers, you will most likely rub on fender liner and/or cab mount. Proper alignment could minimize trimming or chopping the cab mount.

    Thank you for the help. I will look at 255 to see if I can find any of the hybrid types. I will probably be 80% mall crawler 20% off road.

    Did your 255/80/17 wildpeaks require any trimming or spacers? Those look pretty sweet. I was hoping to avoid going to the bigger wheel and the cost that goes with. Ugh

    No sir. I’m even running stock mudflaps, no rubbing at all at full stuff.

    Sema wheels are +4mm, that seems to be the sweet spot if you wanna avoid trimming/cutting.

    Also, every truck is a bit different. What works for me might not work exactly the same way for you.

    Looked up my gearing and find I have 3.909 Off Road package gear ratio. Can I run those 33's comfortably with this rear end. Am already contemplating an OTT for throttle response anyway.

    I mean depends what your expectations are.

    To me, my truck has plenty of power with 33s, 2” lift, ~650# of extra weight, premium gas tune (94E0) and 4.30 gears. 4.88s would be cool for off-roading though, slower crawl ratio.

    To some stock MT Tacoma with 4.30 gears is a “slug”.

    FWIW, I came from a 2007 ford ranger with a 4.0L (207hp), this Tacoma felt like a rocket ship in comparison.

    The 23 TRD OR comes with a MTS (Multi Terrain Selector) and a Crawl Control option. I played with the MTS option last weekend on a OR Trail in George Washington National Forest, in Virginia. Worked well. Different mode options definitely had different feels on the trail. Probably gonna play with the Crawl Control this weekend.

    Did you do an OTT tune or KDMax tune? Or am I missing another option to unleash the hidden EPA Regulation power stifle we experience here in the US?

    Your truck has got a torque converter which multiplies torque, so at low speeds off-road, shouldn’t be an issue. I would just watch the temps with Scangauge.

    Im running OV tune premium SFOB tune (full Otto cycle), manual only tune. Really woke up this 3.5L, loving it!

    I didn't care for the E rated 33's I ran , ST Maxx in 255/80-17 on Semas. I rubbed my flaps as well, but they rubbed on 265/70-17's too. No other rub issues on my truck. I myself feel it is too much tire really for a stock A/T. 6th gear will never be used, and lag off the line was noticeable. MPG took a 2-3 MPG hit.

    Lots of people run skinny's and are happy though.

    I went back to a 265/70-17 after about 15k miles.

    Those do look good! So staying with 17 in wheels is probably the way to go it sounds like.
