Good morning fellow Porchatonians!! We ended up with 4 or5 inches of snow - didn't stop until sometime around 8 or so last night. It's still windy so there's lots of drifting. I'll head out around 8 to start the cleanup. Ugh.

Good morning. Light grocery shopping today and music lesson. Maybe a few little chores around the house or an afternoon movie. Supposed to be windy again today. So far, the wind does not look bad. Yesterday it was windy the entire day.

:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/weatherbugs. No snow accumulation here, and no electricity either since yesterday afternoon. When the power is out for more than a few hours we lose cable too. I set us up with a DSL connection as a backup when I was still working and on call 24-7-365. It's come in handy a lot this past year!

    Morning all:

That's crazy if it came in areas that already have many feet of snow. Was looking at pics. of areas where people live that are buried in snow, they sure don't need any more right now.

Been watching the fallout from SVB, one thing they keep mentioning is something that I have read about "MANY MANY TIMES", the FDIC only fully insures accounts up to $250k, so if you exceed that you should have multiple bank accounts that don't exceed that amount in any one of them, that's the rule!
When it comes to brokerage accounts, the SIPC fully insures brokerage accounts for up to $500k in securities, and $250k in uninvested cash, again, that's the rule!
I'll stop there with just citing the insurance rules pertaining to either a bank account or a brokerage account!
Looks like Credit Suisse, a large diversified Swiss based bank, is coming under scrutiny also and is taking a hit, right now is not a good time to be in financial stocks since they are all taking a hit, but when the dust settles there will be some very good buying opportunities in them.
But in the meantime, how low can they go before it's time to grab some ??????

Amazon is having problems with delivery times coming out of California. Got to assume it's because of snow/rain/weather related road closures. I ordered something that was supposed to be delivered last Saturday, about a week after the order was placed. A couple of days later the delivery time was rescheduled for Tuesday, yesterday. It never arrived and now they say delivery will be today thru Friday... with a note saying that if the item doesn't arrive by then I can apply for a refund. I don't want a refund... I want the item. And I can wait. Kinda screwing up my schedule building the camper van, but it is what it is.

Edit: It arrived. Now all I have to do is figure out what I'm doing with it...lol

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! No snow here, but an actual cold snap on the way after tomorrow. That freeze the guy was making sensational on the weather was WIND CHILL, but still, little veggies won't like that and the greenhouse is all open now. Guess I'll find a garage spot or something. Hair cut and Best Buy geeks today, not much else. Tomorrow, I'll play in the shed to make room for the Triton to sleep.

My dad (bless his soul) refused to believe the FDIC would cover $250K in a single account - opting instead to make the limit his own - $25K. Upon his death, my sister (family CPA) found an office drawer at his house - with maybe 50 bank books. Some had fallen down under the file folders. No they didn't each have $25K - some a hundred bucks and so-on........ but a totally random distribution. He had a computer in that office that had never had been connected to anything other than a 120V wall socket - that was his security system. Some accounts were registered in his files - others, who knows. It took months for Sis to find and consolidate his "savings books" into common local institutions and get my Ma's finances under control.

I think this thinking of his was rooted in a depression era policy whereby insured accounts would only allow withdrawals of a particular value per week. His idea was that the distribution might be a pain in logistics - but would allow more of a withdrawal - per week.

Morning Steve. After my inlaws past away the estate attorney did her due diligence and checked the state and federal unclaimed money or accounts. She did this for 7 1/2 years and only found a few small amounts after the estate was settled I would check periodically and after close to 9 years after they passed I found more money in life insurance policies in my SIL,BIL(both deceased and the benficiaries were my inlaws) and my wife's name plus an account that had no transactions for at least 20 years. After filling out all the required paperwork(a real pain in the ass) we ended up with a little over $35000. Well worth the bs. Just a heads up that you might want to occasionally check the state and federal unclaimed sites. Never know what might turn up:thumbsup:

It is my understanding that there are still a very large number of Americans who keep all their money at home, not just 1st generation Americans either. Whole large populations of people in certain areas of the country are traditionally distrustful of banks. It's part of their culture, generation after generation.

Reading the article, I am not sure that I could drive it. Driven stick since the 60s, but a racing gearbox seems to be different.

Does that mean that the insurance will go down on my 66 now that it has an anti theft device!

I ordered 3 items from REI recently. They came in 3 separate packages, 3 separate shipments. WTF. As far as timing goes, no complaints there at all. Everything arrived amazingly quickly.
