Been looking at pre filters and wondering if anyone has tried this cheap ebay/zon design?

@TacoJohn4x4 - noticed the pre filter you went with, do you have a link to it? Also looks like you used a reducer (?)

Message the seller and ask about the template. What I would do before buying. Either that or just order from the one who originally was listed at the start of the thread. Its been a few years now since I ordered and installed (it came with a nice paper template back then), so it may have changed. IDK.

I believe @Brake Weight purchased from the same seller you listed (labwork). He might be able to confirm the inclusion of a template and/or quality of template.

I bought mine from that same seller. A thick paper template was included. It all worked out great for me.

I ran that lab work snorkel on a Gx470. Worked out really well, though I did change out the mounting studs/washer/nuts to some quality 316 stainless and used loc-tite on the snorkel side.

So I did try the first one listed above. Not 100% confident on it's side drain holes - it doesn't leave as much gap as the snorkel head which comes with the snorkel.

For reference, anyone looking to put a pre-filter on this snorkel, you need to find one with a 3.5" id inlet. Anything else and you'll have to use an adapter sleeve.

The one thing to consider with precleaners is the cfm rate too. Some of the larger engineaire options for example won’t even spin with the 2uzfe until you hit 2k rpm which is worthless on a trail where it would actually matter. You need something that cleans down at trail speed but the drawback is you may restrict flow at higher rpms. If you’ve already considered that then disregard.

You can make a super simple sleeve for some of the 4” ID precleaners by taking a straight rubber plumbing connector with 3.5” id and 4” OD, cutting it down and essentially using it as a spacer between the snorkel body and the precleaner. Works way better than some of the 3.5-4” rubber adapters that let the precleaner flop around.

Donaldson seems to be one of the leaders in the pre-filter/cleaner business. Interesting. Thx for sharing.

EDIT: Just realized you said it was a knock-off.

Lmao I'm not gonna tag and keep harassing the ARB guy months later, but I'm sure ARB was the first to conceive of the idea for a plastic snorkel and thus defines the whole industry and totally didn't copy anyone's design and decide to charge $500 for the same blow-molded crap. Big ol /s

Pretty much identical to the Donaldson- once again, the Chinese just copying someone else’s work

A template did come with my kit. As previously stated look for some stainless hardware to use vs supplied steel. I marked the holes to be cut then used a stepper drill bit to make them. For the large intake hole I simply cut the body off using some curved tin snips I had in the garage. It’s all going to be covered up anyway but I did a good job cutting. Rattle can primer the exposed metal and install. The hardest part is the bolt up and away in the fender. Much patience is needed. While you’re in there go ahead and silicone the airbox to snorkel because the OEM foam padding will be powder.

Thanks guys, i pulled the trigger and ordered. I asked the seller but didn't really answer my question. In any case, looking forward to install once it arrives.

Start with a fresh bit and a fresh hole saw

Once you get past that initial drilling with that hole saw :annoyed:, its smooth sailing.

I thought I read somewhere the Donaldson had a moving blade system (kind of like the sy-klone) and the cheap knockoffs did not. Wonder if that makes a difference. I'm going to check idle and load CFM later today if I have time with both the stock snorkel head as well as the cheap ama-zon I mentioned above.

yeah they did! I think I paid almost double that when I got mine. Still better $120 than like $400 for arb.
