Removed some stuff, added some stuff.
Same reason the bed itself isn’t flat. Reduces surface contact which reduces friction and allows you to slide things out of the bed easier…not to mention it allows you to use thinner material. Just like corrugated steel, the ribs make it stronger

I think the one thing I wish mine had was a locking tailgate, one that locked with the doors.

If you have a DCSB, PK3B6-35JS0 is your OEM plug and play solution, $130ish when I got mine a few months ago. There are other options for other configs. I have three local dealers...two are conventional stealerships and another was within a few dollars of the best online deal I could scrounge up, wound up being cheaper once shipping came in to play. Worth shopping around.

If you think having the option of the tailgate opened at 45 degrees would be a waste, then think again. My prior truck was a Ford SportTrac, which had a really short bed. I did a mod where I could move the tailgate cables to a different position, resulting in the tailgate being held in said position. This made hauling sheets of plywood much easier, along with creating a "level" surface since the upper edge of the tailgate was now even with the bed wheel wells. I also used that mod when I moved bed mattresses, lumber, and some other items. I've looked at doing this mod on my Tacoma but the drilling points are not very favorable.

Probably stating the obvious, but ITT: people who don't use their bed for anything truck-like, other than telling people they have a truck and implying they do truck stuff.

I’ve driven trucks for over 25 years now. You know what I want my tailgate to do? Fold open and closed like a tailgate should. If it comes with a lock, I’m even happier.

Are you able to use chain links like the 2nd gen? IIRC it's 3/8" chain and quick links.

Still all in my head… but I’m keeping the chrome bumper!
Agree, after this post I went out into the garage and really dove into the atrocity that is my Tacoma. It doesn’t just end with the tailgate not locking in at an ever important 45 degree angle, it’s fuckin worse! I started opening all the openie and closie things and I was floored, all them just opened and closed, no innovation, from the doors to the hood to the gas door, all of them just opened and closed. I’d dive deeper but I’m just gonna focus on parting this pile of shit out.

PS… you know they do “let” you test drive these things :bananadance:
