So the rear lights work the same as 4Runners and Tacomas via ground switch.

I inspected the bulb sockets (to clean them with Deoxit) and found a loose ground wire.

I pulled it out so I can better diagnose -

    20230316_152915.jpg

Left it off, and my issue remained the same.

I put it directly in contact with the metal bulb socket and to my surprise, my issue remained the same.

I know it's a ground cause it's got a black stripe (common with Toyota). It wasn't until I followed it back and it "splits" into three grounds; one for each bulb socket in each taillight housing.

The wire had been cut, as if pinched. Stripped it back a bit, crimp connected it, and it works as it should.

On a real note, I didn't realize how the rear "carpet" easily lifts up.

This will make replacing it super easy but I only want to do that once I can find clean replacement interior parts that aren't overpriced.

Ripped some more "extra wire" out, and with the sub removed, I feel better about what's going on in this LC.

Also replaced many of the clips that hold the interior so no more rattling in the rear.

    Shit that sucks.

Mine isn't moist at all (even with the recent rain) but it's worn and stained like a MF.

Ideally I should go with sound insulation and do away with the carpet and replace it with an all-weather mat back there.

I just hate how the trunk space looks ugly compared to the rest of the interior with new leather/seat/console.

@Speedytech7 does your rear wiper work?

Mine suddenly quit working about a week or two ago.

Removing the back panel in the hatch is a 1 minute job so I took the opportunity and thoroughly disconnected, cleaned, and reconnected everything and still nothing.

When I turn the stalk to run the rear wiper, I do hear a sort of click like a relay in the rear, but no motor movement.

My rear wiper works great but the defroster grid has never worked.

Yeah my rear defroster never worked since I got this thing.

I unplugged both ends on the glass, cleaned them, and plugged them in to no avail.

Found wiring that runs through the same wireloom as the rear wiper and...lock actuator?

Saw that it was unplugged, plugged it in and nothing changed. Followed the linkage and see it connected to the "lock" part of the rear hatch. Thought I'd try it and nope, still have to lock and unlock the rear hatch manually.
