I think the hitch will stay on just fine. He should cut it and just not forget about it if he ever wants to actually use the hitch!

I wouldn’t want to be the buyer of that used truck, if he doesn’t tell the new buyer and something happens when the new buyer puts a trailer on it I’m sure he would be legally responsible for it.

Maybe a few pounds of magnesium powder taped to the gas tank so there can be a weenie-roast?

    I don’t get this.

OP are you only doing the vertical cut and leaving the horizontal piece? Or the entire thing?

    If leaving the horizontal piece
    1. The bumper is going to bend off within a week, hit someone on the freeway, and you’ll be in a lot more trouble than a bent/totaled truck
    2. If you get in a wreck and the back part of the falls off, guess what, it’s probably going to be totaled and I’d imagine your insurance is going to deny the claim anyway because you cut though half the frame

This does have the potential for a better departure angle. Sawzall straight up, reattach the taillights, don't worry about the bumper and hitch, the spare tire is literally right there! Steel, rubber filled with air! it's the perfect crash protection! Bro, you know haters gonna hate, DOIT!!

For liability purposes, we all told you not to do it. Or just clear it with the insurance company, and just remind them of the spare tire protection, you should be good.

    Dont forget to send pics!

I like this idea. Nice cushiony bumper to save the rest of the truck.

Cutting your frame doesn’t sound like a good idea. I ain’t no engineer, but I think the frame was designed by some of them.

I do not think National Highway safety has a "rear, offset from exposed spare tire" safety rating.

Saw a stat recently that said the average car driver will get into 3 accidents in their life. So let's assume you start driving at 16 and stop when you turn 80, that would mean you would average being in a car accident every 21 years.

What the OP is suggesting is just plain crazy from a safety point of view. But it also makes no sense from a risk probability perspective either.
