How long should I expect my tacoma to last?

Hi all, I recently purchased a used 2008 Tacoma with 140,000 miles. I plan on doing all the service on my own, like I did with my Camry. How long should I expect the engine and transmission to last? Is there anything I should change/replace (apart from fluids)? Thanks.

 

Welcome to TW…just depends on how the truck was maintained before you got it..my 09 has around 157k now…still drives like new

 

Well maintained I would say no less than 200k but can go 300-400k with good maintenance.

If it's 4wd check the vent hoses on the Transfer Case, ADD, & Diff Lock Actuators.

If you live in the rust belt make sure you keep the frame clean and coated with some form of rust protection.

 

What kind of luck have you had with other vehicles?

Some people can't drive anything without breaking it, and other people rarely break what they drive. Past performance is a pretty good predictor of future performance. That goes for a lot of things...

 

It really comes down to luck of the draw and previous maintenance. I test drove a beat 2006 with over 400k on the original 4.0 and automatic, every panel on it was caved in and the interior was junk, but if the odo wasn't there you'd think it had 100k on it drivetrain wise. I've also seen the 4.0 spit timing chains and have HG leaks sub 200k, admittedly very rarely though

Unless it was ridden hard and put away wet I'd expect at least another 100k out of it with regular maintenance. Though I'd probably leave transmission services to a dealer / shop, they're "sealed" and a little finicky to get right. You can certainly diy it, but it's not as easy as old school spill and fill vehicles.

With anything used it's a gamble, I'd expect a solid experience overall though

 

Is there anything specific I should be looking out for on the hoses?

 

Depending on where you live, you might expect the engine and transmission to outlast the frame.
But there should be no reason it would not make it to 250k with just the basics of maintenance.

 

The only other car I've owned is my camry, and I drove it for around 50K miles before selling it. No issues.

 

If they are cracked or disconnected replace them ASAP as water and dirt will get into the actuators and destroy them.

I do miss the transmission on my camry. I've already replaced the spark plugs in the truck, is putting new atf harder than that was?

 

I had a 08 Camry come in the shop last week had 415k on it, mint condition and all original. It looked better than alot of sub 100k mi vehicles I see.

A fluid pump and patience is highly recommended

 

I couldn't tell ya on the Camry part, but the Tacomas trans is supposed to be at a certain temp when you do it. They also have no dipstick. It's kind of a pita for a diyer

I have an ’08 TRD, access cab, 4.0, 6speed. I bought it new with 27 miles on it. I new have 423943 miles. It’s loaded down with 500+ lbs. of equipment in the bed most of the time. Just drove to Idaho and California 4 times this passed year, 2times I pulled a trailer. Still running good. Fresh oil makes all the difference.

It’s not how long it will last you, it’s on how you take care of it.

 

If you drive it into a forest fire , only a couple minutes

 

I had a 2008 Tacoma Sport DCLB AT. I bought it new in 10/2007. I totaled it 2 years ago with 350k + miles. The AT went at 306k which I then replaced. I’d still have it today if not totaled.
Do all scheduled maintenance and pray the previous owner did the same and it will last.
