Low/no volume from rear speakers?

A friend was in the back the other day and could barely hear anything. I checked the fader and it's set in the middle. If I set it to the rear only, we can't hear anything. When I set it to the rear left speaker, I can hear a bit (maybe 10% of the sound I'd get from the equivalent speaker up front). I can feel the base from it too. The rear right speaker basically has 0 output.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Am I missing a setting? Would like to do what I can do before taking it in....

It's a 2022 Tacoma TRD Sport btw My friend has a 2017 TRD Sport so I know this isn't normal.

Yep. Without an amp - not much you can do that I know of.

Yes, completely normal. You'll need an amp to fix it. The kicker key is a fantastic choice

 

You would think that for what I paid for a 2022 SR5 DC that I should at least be able to hear the radio in the back. I had mine to the dealer today and they said it was the way it was designed, they don't see it as a problem.

I think someone at Toyota Corporate needs to pay attention here. This is not acceptable.

Third gen Tacos have always had low power to the rear speakers. It's due to the head unit. You'd have to replace the head unit or add an amp to fix it.

 

Toyota is doing their part to save our hearing in old age.

 

I bought a harness from Red Wolf and wired the front speakers to the rear speakers. So now I have a 2 channel head unit but it does add more volume to the rear speaker for around 14 dollars.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (and this is for non-JBL headunits) but all my readings on this forum has concluded that the head unit puts out way less power to the rear than front.

2020-2023 models that have the updated head unit are apparently worse than the 2016-2019 head unit for rear power.

So even if you upgrade the rear speaker to an aftermarket one it won't do a difference. Toyota technicians will unfortunately have no solution either. I'm willing to bet, certain dealerships may change the headunit and even speaker just to hear the same outcome.

That said your only solution if you want to hear the rears is an aftermarket in dash unit or adding an aftermarket amplifier.

Normal. The sound stage is biased towards the driver's seat. Rear speakers are basically for show only.

Some people on here don't even bother replacing the rears when upgrading. They just bi-amp the fronts. I did all 6 speakers and amp. There's no practical difference for me, but my dogs seem to appreciate hearing the subtleties of SRVs guitar work.

 

2020 can confirm it is not loud. Cannot confirm if it is worse.

 

What happens when you set the fader all the way to the rear? If you get good sound in both rear speakers then the wiring/speakers are getting power. If only one speaker is working then check the wiring connections and speaker of the other side. If both are not getting power then the there is probably something faulty from the head unit. If the truck is still under warranty let the dealer do the diagnostics.

 

I spliced my rear speakers at the back of the deck for my Sub amp! Sounds great.

 

OP, use 2 Megaphones for the rear speakers!
