Question about codes on non starting 01 prerunner

Hope this is not a dumb question, I'm no pro but can walk and chew gum and installing motor. Does a 5vz fe need to actually start and run to throw codes or will the pcm identify a missing or out of spec signal from just cranking the engine over with no start.

 

Yes with the critical codes that might cause the fuel to be shut off.

Missing signals the engine needs to start .

Well none, I'm installing an engine now, it had no codes when parked, well no check engine light. It ran but had spun bearings. It sat with battery disconnected for a year and I tried to fire it up after finally buttoning the install up properly today. CRANK no start first attempts, sounds good but no start. I put a crappy code reader on it and no codes were present. That's all I did got too tired after wrenching long hours myself past 3 days.

 

Does the tach move when cranking?

 

I guess what I was hoping if the pcm would give me some feedback to tell where I screwed up or if my sensors were bad or something without running

I don’t think the 1st Gen trucks will turn on the fuel pump until it sees a crank signal.

 

New filter 5 gls super old filter pretty dirty its a jdm motor was super clean inside and out pulled fuel rails when on stand they clean clean but did not.mechanically clean on bench.

 

Im gonna start chasing sensors tommorrow all everything new or refurbed but sensors. Uuugh it looks so good put together tear it apart tommorrow

 

Sensors were same exact identical part some with numbers that were on my old motor that's why I did not swap em my sensors were junk looking from oil and WP LEAKS.

 

You are going to need to verify if you have a crank signal.
It’s looking like you don’t, spraying a bit of fuel into the intake while cranking might give you a direction to start looking. If it fires up, you have a fuel issue.
If it doesn’t, check spark.
