    Leaf-sprung IFS would be a game-changer.

Just had a thought, we can cut the coils and slam the trucks. :cookiemonster::puke:

They are better in the sense that you can easily change a leaf spring to meet the load requirements.

Larger leaf spring packs and air bags are simple. It's why commercial still uses them, and I think all 1 ton trucks are leaf still.

With coils you have less options, bump stops and heavier coils are basically it. The shitty inner air bags are not useful.

I'd still rather tow with a coil tundra vs a leaf tundra, stock to stock.

Someone told me that there is more lateral stability in a leaf spring as you don’t have the play of the link bushings and the arc of the panhard-rod to contend with when towing. I don’t tow, so I have no experience with this, but someone was yammering on to me at one point about how crappy it is to tow with a 4Runner as they said “the rear axle is all over the place”.

I’ll be curious to see if this is the case for people who tow with the next Tacoma.

I sure won't miss them. After seeing how much it improved the Ram platform 24 (EDIT: 14 years) years ago, it surprises me how slow other companies are to adopt it. Cost is probably the main reason, but I know for a fact the 5 link/coil set up virtually eliminated the dreaded drive line vibration issues on that truck. It also set the ride and handing standards very high in the half ton segment.

I’m keeping my 23. If she breaks, I’ll fix her. No 24, and beyond for me.
I am always on the lookout for a restorable clean mid 80’s extended cab, and first gen 4Runner. Those will be my next Toyota purchase, if I should get lucky and find the right project calling my name.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know Rams had been coil spring for so long.

The chain only gets deployed when I need to pull into a highway rest stop for a 15 minute dump. And obviously I'm going to run a cloth sock between bike frame and the anchor chain so as to protect the paint. It was very expensive.

Dodge has used springs in the rear for a while now, even on the 3500 Ram. As long as the springs are heavy duty I wouldn't mind springs instead of leaves.

Bring on the Coils! I am assuming the biggest benefit will be in overall ride quality and not necessarily for heavy hauling and towing, but a current stock Tacoma can't tow or haul heavy now. And ride like shit anyways.

    Might as well be comfortable.

I'm concerned about a lot of 3rd gen Tundra owners posting about sag when towing 6-7k lb trailers and inquiring about airbags, etc. I'm sure it's much better for daily driving but the only reason I own a full size is for towing.

Max payload on a leaf sprung Ram in 08 was about 1500#, the next gen coil sprung truck had a payload of almost 2000#.

Back in the day, I do remember my 67-72 GMC’s coil spring rear suspension rode nice. However, when I was young and foolish, I did slam the rear end of very nice 1972 short wheel base into a curb while leaving the peeler bar. I had hit the throttle and spun a 360. Drove the rear end over about 6” and pretzeled the tracking arm.

I already have air bags on my leafs since they sag under weight, of a cap... Never mind actually doing truck stuff.

I've gone from stock to Sumos to HD Dakars to stock with an AAL to stock/AAL/Bagged.

I'll diddle a coil setup just the same if need be.
