How does having the transmission plate effect transmission temp? Seems like some of these cat shields and cat shield mods reduce air flow..

What's your opinion and anyone else that has experience with skid plates during summer wheeling

I wheeled in 90-95f all summer last year with guys with these skids, I don’t think we had a single overheating transmission.

i drove across the country up to where there is a sign that welcomes you to the end of the world and back in the middle of +40c temps and through -40c temps.

Temps fall into range of "Super good enough".

stay ontop of the maintance schedule, you'll never need to worry

I have the full package steel RCI skids + cat shields and run around in the desert out here during the summer where it gets up to 120 at times, never had a transmission overheating problem once.

Slight shift in topic...regarding exhaust cross-over pipe and skids. I have a question about RCI skids specifically and it may apply to skids in general.

If the skid fits OEM configuration of exhaust (cross-over not re-routed/raised) what's the point or fixing/raising the exhaust if the skid will be low enough or formed to have cleared it anyway?:notsure:

RCI sells two skids. One completely flat one for those that have rerouted and one that protrudes down for stock exhaust config...HTH

Thanks, I guess that figures. I would have known when I placed the order. At least now I know to do the exhaust first. I'll just add that to the project list!

Is the exhaust re-routed for any reason other than "ground clearance"?

The front skid makes sense in daily driving ... my Corolla suffered the ill affects of not having any splash protector (freeway debris impact) by the accessory belt rotting away.

But does the transmission plate matter if just light off-roading? Gives a mounting point for converter shields, but also seems "might as well fo TC plate as well" by that point.

Trans pan hangs pretty low and is wide open to being murdered by whatever is in the way... $350 trans skid vs several thousands for a new trans

I think now about "freeway debris impact" (have for years ... had 5 second view of some plate in the lane and could not change lanes rapidly at 60 MPH without being a hazard, so ...) and added to your statement "hangs low" ...

Insurance indeed. Since TC not mentioned I will save that money.

The flat skids are preferable to the dropdown for the exhaust crossover because it creates a completely flat bottom skid surface, which makes it much easier to slide off of rocks. The exhaust crossover and bump out in the skid plate give a point for you to get stuck on a rock. I have plenty of gouges from the front of my engine skid to the flat rear transfer case skid and have never gotten hung up, but I'm sure it would have happened if I didn't reroute the crossover. The crossover is also the lowest point underneath the truck, minus maybe the differentials, so eliminating that low point is a bonus offroad.

Ask a regional forum on here- if you’re in the GTA (Ontario) Sumin Auto will do it, and do it well.

It protects your stock exhaust. Can't hit it and tear it off if you move it out of the way

Garfab wanted to make a Weld-it-yourself kit, dont think he ever did one of those.
mine was a little close to the box, so we just wrapped it in heat tape and i bolted a piece of metal to act as a reflector. pretty sure that reflector is long gone by now

I posted in regional. I read in other threads about shops use rust-able material and about some kits with better material as well. I will check with SDHQ (local) for their initial estimate.
