Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!! MPG

Hey guys so my bro and I both have 2005 access cabs. He never does any work to his truck at all I do it all for him, and all the suddent he wants/NEEDS a CAI for better MPG so he was looking around for some and I told him that he should either go with AFE or TRD. But they to me dont do a whole lot for MPG like only a slight difference will occur. He was going to do a exhaust with it for maximum performance since he has seen the difference in my truck (flowmaster) compared to his. Well what I wanted to know is can a set up like this do the same thing as a FULL CAI and achieve the same benefits and performance.

this is motomans CAI set up and I wanted to see what the pros and cons were of it if anyone knew?

I just installed a AFE, CIA. I have not yet noticed good or bad on the MPG, it seems to have stayed about the same. hope this helps a bit.... and I'm running stock exhaust still.

 

well what I am trying to figure out is does all the piping which the air filter connects too matter or can the filter be bolted to the stock set up like the picture above

 

Tell him to save the money for gas. Even if a cai got you 2 mpg better it would take a very very long time to recoup the 200-300 bucks they cost

 

On the AFE you get a new filter box that sits on the right side fender and new pipe to the TB. You scrap the entire stock intake system.

 

Ive tried explaining that to him and he seems to have someone feeding him the idea that a combo of CAI and Cat back exhaust will make a world of a difference in MPG

 

CAI nor exhaust is going to gave any real gains in MPG's or power. More often then not it gets worse. Nice easy acceleration to posted speed limit and keep the RPM's under 2000 is your best bet. These trucks with the 4.0 are not easy on gas.

what would you say that spacing the manifold would do? just more power right?

 

You can check out my fuelly notes before and after I installed an AFE Stage 2 (WAI). MPG went to crap at first because I kept hot rodding. My biggest MPG gain is cruising around town under 2k RPMS, never exceeding 3k RPMS when accelerating onto the freeway up to the speed limit, and keeping the RPMS at or under 2k, or my speed no faster than 70mph (slightly above 2k rpms).

If a light ahead of me turns red, I take my foot off the gas until I have to stop or the light turns green. Stay in the slow lane and try not to piss other people off

 

according to the guys on xru underground (x-runner forum) they saw 2 mpg increase and also more power in the low end and top end rpm ranges

 

thanks for all the info guys we went with a catback exhaust system and drop in K&N. So far it seems to be doing well we also did a ton of preventative maintenance on the truck as well which also helped a ton.

 

Were looking at for both of our trucks doing throttle body spacers and maybe even JBA or Doug Headers so well see...

Yes, really, throttle body spacers don't work. Whoever posted that was, hopefully, just being sarcastic. If you friend wants to spend his money on both the AI and the catback, let him. I did it too and I like the sound of it, and maybe, MAYBE the added gains in high RPM.
I didn't buy them for more MPG.

He'll learn. Just don't let him blame you for it afterwards since he's pushing the issue.
