Tacoma leaf springs are known to go flat and sag. I don't mind leafs, or a not so smooth ride my RC is very stiff AAL in the rear 650# coils up front digressive shocks all around. I'm sure an Amish buggy is smooth and civilized in comparison. Any other leaf sprung vehicle is most likely an improvement in ride quality.

Coils on the Tacoma might be an improvement in ride quality. They wont handle weight as well as leafs. I don't want air ride in a truck, it's the main thing that keeps me away from the GX, it can be deleted but I find myself gravitating to the new ones when I'm looking. I don't want to delete the adjustable ride from a new vehicle. Air ride if available on the Tacoma will probably only be available on something like a Limited.

Ram still makes work trucks with the rear coils, so I doubt if the Tacoma will abandon the SR trim for the 4th gen, but IDK how good of a work truck a midsize with rear coils can be.

I can't see buying a 4th gen myself, 3rd gens have priced themselves out of what I want to pay for a Tacoma. There's also that driver's side exgaust outlet, and what I think is the end of the LPCD hubs. It's the little things that make a Toyota truck what I like about them.

4th gen will probably be a good midsize truck that drives fine, but I'd just get a Ridgeline if that's what I want out of a truck.

Probably coils since each TNGA-F truck platform will be shared with the SUV platform. I believe it has everything to do with cost, and has nothing to do with ride quality which would only be an added benefit if ride quality is improved.
3500 and up still come with leaf springs. I doubt if there's a coil that could handle the weight. Many of those trucks also get after market secondary helper springs added to accommodate the upfit.

Why does this suspension setup contribute to rollovers?

Drivers I'm betting - taking bad lines, braking while descending, etc.

That stuff can happen to anyone.

One thing I notice in those 3 vehicles is that they had a bunch of crap on top and with the vehicle being lifted, all that weight can definitely act as that added 'leverage' to topple it over.

    Overlanders amirite?

I'm saying it now, when we see the MSRP on a turbo-4 mill with coil and disc rears, this site will collectively shit a brick.

Couple of thoughts ... correct me if I am wrong ...

"braking going downhill" was mentioned as possible reason for roll over. Makes sense that rapid braking from speed destabilizes. Is that once of the reasons "crawl mode" is slow and jerky ... less momentum to stop so can stop frequently safely?

Also "top weight". Physics has said that for at least a few months (years, forever!). I thought that center-mass, and smaller than Tundra, made Tacoma a good choice. Am I at least partially correct?

Crawl mode surprised me with how jerky it was, but am told that is normal.

These reasons were suggested for the rollovers. I was trying to connect those theories with what I thought when buying the Tacoma and when using crawl mode.

The point that Kwikvette was making, was that it's been a trend lately to stack a crap ton of weight on the roof rack. 4R owners are notorious about it, but a large number of Taco owners are guilty about it too.

20 gallons of unleaded, a 10 gallon solar shower, a spare tire, a 150 pound tent and a 270 degree awning just might alter your vehicle's CoG and reduce off camber stability.

Agreed. Took physics in college though cannot recall the exact formula for calculating center-of-mass in oddly-shaped bodies (roof rack, tent). Torque = force X distance, and all that.

Probably reason enough to stick with my belief that center-cab Tacoma makes easier introduction to off-roading. And my belief that crawl mode is probably better than trying to limit momentum downhill manually.

Base DCSB 4x4 MSRP will be at a minimum 45k probably more. Most trims will probably be around 52-57k. That's 1st year pricing so the price will go up from there.

Edit this place will probably change it's name to Maverick World.

Not a fan of coils for the rear. If I wanted a truck to ride like a car...I'd buy a car.

Don't have to like it; point is that it still works even for off-roading.

My 4Runner took me places other drivers in their Tacoma wouldn't even attempt. My Land Cruiser uses coils in the rear as well.

Some claim that the Gen3 is a truck w a minivan motor, I guess Gen4 is slated to be a truck w an SUV suspension.

Most complaints I hear about drums (and C-channel for that matter) usually sound like talking points you’d hear from a salesperson at a Chevy dealer, just not very compelling.

Regardless of what Tundra owners might think about their new coils, (or turbos, or hybrid..) what I do know is they are paying a hell of a lot more money for this gen Tundra than the last one. Expect Gen4 Taco to follow that pattern riding on its brand new coils & discs…

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Prices are sure up compared to the not so distant past.

I just looked here at CDN prices. A new 2023, TRD access cab Off Road model, is $47K before taxes. In BC, with taxes and licensing and fees that works out to $57K.

Not sure what 2024's will cost.

I have the 2016 TRD access cab, Off Road model. Bought it used in mid 2018 for $35K. It had a low 6,000 miles on it, a trade in for a Tundra at the same dealer.

I could not afford any vehicle that was over $40K. So I was lucky to get my truck at the $35K price.

Guys must have a lot of money to afford a new Taco, then add another $15-20K in a lift, tires, racks, bumpers, rooftop tent, etc....

Sheesh, I am retired after my last job was in high tech for 23 years with a good manager wage, and still cannot afford even the RTT.

Ground tent for my aching body...

Worked as a commercial fisherman for 16 years before that, but blew all that money on partying. Live and learn. :)

Inexperienced people that off road have a tendency to do one of two things; hit the brakes or hit the gas, and most often it's the brakes.

It happens as a sort of panic in an off-camber situation, and if you're not used to it, it's easy to act hastily and make the wrong choice.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried not to panic during my brief stretches off-road (as in life ... 50+ years of living teaches you about panic). But still good to hear it.
