Drove out to Frey Ranch today while I had a day to kill in Reno. Nice small operation. The tour was short but got to see a decent amount. Picked up a bottle of their BiB Rye and an Oat mash whiskey I'd never seen/ heard of. Pretty tasty.

It is good if you're not a proof hound. 86 proof, good mellow oak flavors and sweetness. Does not burn. Given that the typical rate for age stated bourbons these days is around $10 per year of age, I consider it a good deal (usually clocks in around $100/bottle).

It's a Diageo product, sourced for them from New Bernheim distillery at Heaven Hill, although Diageo tries to pretend it's a Stitzel-Weller product:
    https://www.stitzelwellerdistillery.com/whiskey#iwharper

I drink it less now that my tastes on American whiskey have shifted toward barrel proof/cask strength bourbons and ryes. Usually if I enjoy the 80-90 proof range it's in the form of Scotch or Irish Whiskey.

Heading to Reno in a little over a week for work. Any whiskey-related recommendations, whether stores, or bars/restaurants with a great selection?

@VXEric you were just there right?

I recall going to one particular large store there last year where the prices were absolutely absurd. Only place I’ve ever seen 1792 Sweet Wheat on the shelf ($200).

Hoping to score at a hole in the wall perhaps.

@Hook78 Anything specific you're looking for? I did quite a bit of looking around so may have seen something.

For drinks definitely go to the Terrace bar at the Peppermill. They have a crazy amount of options. They are out to lunch with pricing on stuff like BTAC and rare Michters. Old Fitzgerald and Four Roses LE were in the 30-40 range and then the allocated but attainable stuff wasn't bad. Stagg for 18.

As far as hunting most of the places "downtown" near the Reno sign had nothing. Total Wine had some decent options I couldn't get in PA, their online inventory is good if you know what you're looking for. Ben's Fine Wine had a few locations. I stopped into the one near the airport and it was OK, I have a feeling the ones further north or east would have been better. But they did have a Frey Ranch store pick and BT for MSRP. Also if you haven't tried Frey Ranch, have a pour, it's worthwhile.

I always have my eyes open for Taylor since it’s unattainable here, but really I’m interested in anything I can’t find my way normally.

There’s a place with Taylor BP for only $400, got that news over the phone

I’d love to find the Frey at a bar and try it, wish I had time for the distillery.

    Thanks for the tips!

No one ships direct to NC, as state law makes it very illegal :(

I did the Apple Pay test…it appears I can purchase…but I’d rather pick one up in person.

You should be able to find the Frey bourbon to try just about anywhere. Just unpacking and realized I got the rye instead of the bourbon, happy surprise!

I agree buying in person is best for sure but a word to the wise... the Frey Ranch bottles are heavy! The 750 weighs 4.5 lbs. By comparison that bottle of Weller is 2.4. So if you are near weight limit or have anything fragile in your bag shipping isn't a bad option.

So we have similar laws here but it seems a lot of these distilleries have found loop holes

For example…it’s illegal to ship, but you can deliver. So outsource companies deliver from neighboring states. We shall see how long all this lasts
