Naw, feel free to join all of us. You made me forget to ask if he had a locker or not since that makes a difference in gearing.

I think if it were manual it would be a whole different ball game, at least feel wise. I know my 2.7 Tacoma with a stick *felt* quicker than the auto 3.4, but it might not have been in reality.

This is the first real trip (350 miles) I had done in it for almost a year. I've likely just gotten spoiled by my other car that happily sits at 80 and never needs to downshift on hills.

Runner could certainly have some issues with it, but none that feel blatantly obvious. Throttle / kickdown cables are adjusted properly, ignition parts are newer, pulls 17-18 mpg highway... The only thing it does do is crank for a bit on cold starts. Basically does the typical cranking rhythm, but twice. After that on hot starts it's normal, will occasionally light off with just a key bump. I'm sure the injectors are leaky or the check valve in the pump is dying / dead

It's a really shit video, but this is a general idea of how it accelerates. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TpfGloG0zjZZXlmbP3z8ykhmTZeQrrqm/view?usp=drivesdk

Unfortunately the diff is very open and very 4.10

Interesting. Then again you're in Vermont so I don't know how the air density, elevation, etc. are compared to here.

I was easily getting 21-22mpg before going 33's and lifting it and afterward, was still getting a good 17-18mpg give or take.

Aside from basic maintenance, I did nothing extra.

But that gearing could make a bit of a difference, albeit a small one, it still helps with running larger tires.

After my old best friend went to prison I briefly owned a shitbox 5vz 5 speed 4 runner

And now own a 5vz 5 speed tundra

    I've also owned 2 different 5vz autos

Both autos felt like they were hauling 800 or 1200 extra lbs at all times

Also a factor to consider is altitude

When I went from 3.90 to 4.10 in my 3rz auto 4 runner it was a pretty noticeable increase in torque so gearing also definitely matters

No I totally get that a manual would make a huge difference on the same engine; the comparison was with the same engine and same transmission (same year too).

I don't think I'd want to own an auto 5VZ ever again.

In the summer with ideal conditions it'll get high 19s for mpg if I drive it at the speed limit. But it was mid 20s outside for temp this trip, and I set cruise at 70ish for 140 miles. It's a very hilly drive, and I was fighting a ridiculous head wind to boot. I never saw more than 18 out of my manual 2.7 in the winter months either

I'm certain the trans in the thing is tired, it was a tow mule in AZ for one of the previous owners. It doesn't slip or flare, but it's definitely lazy getting into OD.

I also fixed the link if it didn't work before

The price of Toyota FIPG is outta hand. $35... Also I forgot I already had a half full tube so I'm mostly just salty about that. Also my new tube expired 3 months ago and the old one expired like 3 years ago and still set up just fine in the right time.

I mean I'd describe my t4r the same way he did but probably because my only other 5vze point of comparison is supercharged

I remember saying the same exact thing some 2-3 years ago...except it was under $30?

    Fucking inflation.

Gross it's a 280zx haha. Those are really only good for the engine and transmission, the donor engine for my car is from a 280zx.

I wonder why this has been sitting for a week near me. I thought these were really desirable. $6500 seems reasonable too.

Neoprene seat covers in the front? Mileage is low but doesn't align with seat wear.

They might have been offered $2,000 on trade.

Questions would be when was the last water pump and timing belt service. Nice engine though.

30 years old -- Figure all new hoses and seals.

Looks like an expensive thing about waiting to happen unless you like to work on cars.

I've been there and done that.

I’m really thankful I can make this shit at home with this kinda flavor in without cooking stocks for 9 hours. Gotta love Hawaii supermarkets
