2.7l towing over 2200lbs..

so i have a 2.7l 1997 taco. i have a camper that weighs roughly 1650 empty. 2 dirtbikes. (4 stroke) so thats like 400. then all my camping stuff gear and blah blah, plus the weight of people in my truck.

my truck cant be in 5th when doing any ammount of speed as it will bog down unless going down like a 5% grade haha. i race dirtbikes and my next few races are up north going up hills, i think it will have a really hard time... if it can even make it.... any opinions? re gear? mods? haha any help is appreciated thanks!

or just leave it in 4th...thats what the owners manual tells us to do with our automatic tranny

 

yeah going up hills i would probably be in 2nd doing about 30. or 1st.... my truck has no balls haha. and i bet a supercharger would help. couple grand later ha

note: they are long rpetty steep hills

 

It'll make it just fine... Take it easy and don't expect to hold your speed on hills or go 75 down the highway. If you tow a lot, then maybe look into regearing or moving up to the V6.

 

what size tires are you running? 33"+ i would regear. you get quite a bit of power back i hear...

 

well im going to try here in a couple weeks but going up just a small hill i cant hold 45 ):

 

i have 31s, but when i pull for a long distance i go back to my street tires... it does help

 

are u saying u cant hold 45 with the hammer down in like 2nd or 3rd?

 

i cant hold 3rd going up some hills, even if i start out at 4000rpms before i hit the hill, i have tried second and it got me up the hill, but the hills im going to be going up are longer and i think a little steeper..

EDIT: and i dont want to kill my truck. it has 164k miles

 

honestly i think its time to upgrade or get a new tow rig

 

i got a tiny pop up camper haha cant really get much smaller, thanks for the input, ill get a new taco soon for towing and my current for a desert truck!! ill see how it goes when i go up north ):

 

lets say i cant makt it up this hill, maybe if im in first... would it bad to put it in 4 low, since i have manual hubs just dont lock them in so it will be like im in 2wd?

 

you can do that it just makes u lose mpg due to extra resistance on drivetrain

just remember you cant go very fast in 4 low...

 

i know i can go like 55 in 4 low at about 4k rpms in 5th haha.. thanks was just a thought!

 

ive seen people flamed for less! always read not to go above 15mph in 4lo just btw

 

are you serious?? wow thank you... im in the desert wheelin alot and sometimes if there is another close section that i will need to go back into low i just keep in low and hammer down.

Just letting you know dhk is the guy that says you can tow 7000lbs with the 4cyl 5 lug taco...just putting into perspective how creditable his opinion is on this subject.

 

yeah bs on 7k. my truck wouldnt move in 4 low on pavement going down hill with 7k behind it

 

You see my point...they call it 4 LOW b/c you should be moving at a low speed. Try going faster once and u will never want to again. Truck just wayy overworking itself.
