Just got some awesome-looking made in USA wheels and tires shipped from Tire Rack. 16x8 0-offset KMC Trails with 265/70R16 Cooper Discoverer Rugged Treks. Seems like they used a lot of weight/weights. We have 5.5oz, 5.5oz, 6.75oz, and 8.25oz of wheel weights respectively. Send it, or send it back?

For reference, total weight per wheel/tire combo is 64 pounds without weights.

Woulda gone with @Discount Tire, (America's Tire in this part of the country) but they didn't list KMC Trails on the site.

I heard that KMC wheels are made in the USA, I can't recall what styles I looked at on line, but they weren't made in the US. I think they were imported from China.

The style you have very well could be American made. Different styles could be sourced from different factories. It is what it is, but I'd double check if that's why anyone is buying them.

Already got it confirmed that KMC Trail wheels specifically, and some other models, are made in USA before a bought them. The point of my OP is the crappy balancing job done by Tire Rack.

I'm hoping @Discount Tire can give some advice.

Heck, those 1oz weights look tall enough to interfere with the brake calipers. Won't be able to check until next week.

My KMC summit 718s were made in China and my SCS Ray 10s were made in Thailand. It’s almost unavoidable these days

I'm not sure that amount of weight on this size tire is unusual. I have a ton of weights on all 4 of mine and I get them balanced regularly. At least they used black weights on yours, Discount uses aluminum color on black wheels.

Pretty sure if you were running beads they’d recommend 4-8 oz per wheel.
The standard for motorcycle tires is 3oz. If the tire takes more than that it can be returned as defective. My wheels have plenty of lead on them as well. It’s only a problem if they come off lol

That was what I was thinking different styles are made in different places.

Get the wheels balanced if it's a concern of yours. FWIW tireracks website is annoying when looking for more info like wheel weight and different offsets than factory specs. I guess they are trying to get you the products that will work with your particular vehicle. Not the best when looking for different fitments and trying to see whats available in different sizes for different vehicles.

@e6400ultra the wheel and tire package looks fantastic! If you are concerned about the amount of weight, go into your nearest Discount Tire and they will double check the balance at no cost. Considering Tire Rack is our sister company. They also have black weights. The OL designation on the KMC wheels designates production in the USA. Nice choice of wheels!

Thanks for the input. Think the 8.25 oz of weights could indicate a bad tire?

The KMC wheel model numbers also designate if it's a US made wheel. These are model KM72368068700US

@e6400ultra the amount of weight can sometimes be reduced simply by ride matching the assembly. We used to call it 180ing the tire on the wheel. You are correct on the part number also. The US designates USA made. A local discount tire could help you with that.

Is 8.25 ounces an excessive amount of weights on a 64 pound wheel/tire combo?

@e6400ultra 8.25 ounces is what it took to balance the assembly, however I do believe with a little more attention to detail, (Road Force) they should be able to reduce that amount.
