My feelings toward the knob are ambivalent; do I hate it? Nope. Do I love it? Nope again. I'm decidedly spoiled, but the factory knob of the likes of my wife's (former) GTI and her current Mazda3 are way better than the one in the Tacoma, and I won't even get into how nice the knob was on my old 5-Series BMW; yeah, I'm spoiled.

I keep hoping Rick one day finds his Ti 5 speed knob and lets me send him a million dollars for it :) :) :)

Cause it's hard to keep up with the Ti knob elites...

Once you box up the knob, it's hard to find it again.

Pedal placement sucks for that. I did try it a few times, it didn’t turn out that great hah.

Ah, here's my thread. I went straight to the Tacoma because I've only ever owned manuals. Normally I would have considered the Ranger and Ridgeline, but autos annoy me so much that I knew they weren't an option unless the Taco was terrible. Which it's obviously not. :)

Early on in pics I was a bit puzzled by the shift knob. In pictures it sometimes looks like it's splitting along the seam. Not the case, obviously.

It's not a sports car transmission by any means but it's appropriate for a truck. It would probably be a good vehicle for learning on. The clutch is gradual and finding the gates is easy. The long clutch might be a workout for some.

I'm still getting the hang of when it needs first gear. Our CX-5 had a lot of low end torque for its weight and almost never needed first gear unless you were at a dead stop. The Taco doesn't seem happy with rolling starts from 2nd.

Heel and toe? Only if you want to break your ankle.

It's possibly deliberate how bad the pedal layout is for heel toe. Hard pass.

2nd gear definitely should’ve been a bit lower, well and R but 2WD LOW mod solves that.

Im pretty happy with the rest of the gearing though.

I mostly agree. It’s not a bad trans, decently smooth and I like the throws but I don’t like the ratios at all. They suck. But, it is what it is.

As for 2nd and 1st, when rolling, on stock gears I wouldn’t use 2nd below about 10 mph. I’d downshift to 1st. Now that I’m regeared, that has lowered to around 5 mph. I use 1st a whole lot. Certainly everytime from a complete stop, even geared.

A large group of Candians use Meterial... or Impertric... I use metric for speed, mileage and temperature but Imperial for measuring and weight.
