The folks who truly understand that are called "serial entrepreneurs" and will do just fine for themselves as they capitalize on fad after fad.

Yea he knows he's opening some kind of box  pappy pays him okay enough I'm guessing ... I think it has more to do with still living at-home and not having any real bills. He's wanting to go to college to be an automotive design engineer and supposedly only working here for a year to save up money... im trying to convince him he's better off keeping his current BMW (since he's spent 7k on service work over the past year) and just modding it to be more of what he wants.

He got excited when I shared what you had lol he's a really quiet kid (I've known him a lil since he was 14 coming and helping his grandfather over the summers) but boy can he get to talking when it's about luxury cars or cars that go fast. He has very little to no mechanical savvy, and stupidly takes his vehicle into the dealership to have them fix everything. He's dropped 7k over the past year in service work and what he's described they've done does not sound like alot lol

I'm trying to convince him to drop the turbo notion. Apparently the N52 engine has a supercharger aftermarket? He wants that and a tune if he doesn't get a turbo lol

N52 is a really good engine, I had the n55 which is the turbocharged direct injection version. I'm pretty sure there's a Dinan supercharger for the n52 and then all you need is a tune.

He say what school he wants to go to? Curious if it's Art Center College of Design, I got my photo degree there but they're world renowned for automotive design. In fact I think the current bmw lead designer is an alumni

The auto design dept grad shows were always so cool to see there

Back in England my dad used to have this E30 with a 5 speed and the M10 engine. I can’t remember how many miles it had, but it seemed like a pretty solid car.

He technically has the N51 but he was explaining that the only difference between that and the 52 is the intake and some other emissions stuff? I don't know enough about the differences to help answer his BMW specific questions, I'm just trying to keep him engaged cause his grandfather wants me to be nice and friendly with him lol.

He's probably right I don't play with the naturally aspirated engines that much because I don't really see any reason to to be honest. But BMW changes the engine model iteration even for emissions crap all the time like the n20 is a 4-cylinder turbocharged direct injected engine and they changed the injectors and PCV system to meet stricter emissions standards and then change the engine designation to n26 but physically they're the exact same engine and everything interchanges

He mentioned a school in Florida:facepalm:

But I think he only wants to go there cause that's where he was born and his mom is moving back in a year. Bill (his grandad and my Boss) has been trying to convince to stay in WA state and go to one of the many accredited schools here.

My buddy had a 1991 E30 with the m20 engine and we manual swapped it in an afternoon and the very next day slap a turbo kit on it with a cheap megasquirt pre-built computer and even with 15 lb of boost shoved down its throat that thing refuses to give up. It's a delightfully simple little engine

Good to know, that's info I can spout off to make it look like I care

I'm not much into cars that go fast but I'd rather fake interest about JDM stuff over German engineering

Yea it might’ve been the M20 actually. In a way BMW kinda lost the plot once they started adding all the VANOS and crazy gadgets and gizmos. They used to make simple honest DIY friendly cars, kind of in the spirit of Toyota.

I wouldn't ever take a jump to saying that any of them are simple to work on but the E30 is probably the simplest BMW there is to own. If you ever find yourself morbidly curious about BMW models and the technology behind them and what it takes to repair them you should really watch the YouTube channel m539restorations

The guy is super entertaining and repairs everything the right way, no matter how painful or cost inefficient
